Post-it notes, huh? Hmmmmm, that has possibilities. Since I'm still new
to the scarecrow, I get my obligatory "spraying" and heart jumpstart each
time I go out to the pond. It still gives me a good laugh, but
unfortunately I leave the office each day to go home for lunch, and I went
back to the office today with much straighter (and wetter!) hair than I left
with!

Two issues I have with the scarecrow...maybe some of you long-time users
have suggestions? First one is that I find the scarecrow actually shifts
backwards each time it goes off from the pressure of the water. This causes
the stream of water to spray up HIGHER than I'd like, and it also keeps
loosening the earth around the stake from all the shifting of the post.
Second thing is I'd like the stake to be longer so I could stick it into the
ground deeper yet still have enough height on the scarecrow to monitor and
spray OVER my rock border. If I shove the stake deeply into the ground, the
head of the scarecrow barely peeks out over the rocks. Maybe I'll go see if
the manufacturer sells extension stakes.

Did she try the motion sprinkler scarecrow?

I'm hearing good reviews, and I am happy with mine. Though I am waiting

for
shops to start selling the scarecrow sign: "Beware of attack sprinkler."

Since I put my little post-its on the door with "Sprinkler?" written on
them, both going in (to remember to turn it on) and out, to turn it off. I
haven't got wet lately. Course it also is wise to take your last look at
the pond, before turning it on. Once turned on, with downcast eyes (so you
don't see something else to snip, straighten, or rearrange) go straight in
the house. ~ jan

My DH has already spoke of lengthening the spike. He
suggested a
piece of 2 x 4 and duck tape. Hopefully, he'll come up
with a better solution ;-)

I am AFRAID to mention to my husband that I'd like the scarecrow a little
higher. He will rig up something that he thinks is PERFECT, and won't hear
me when I suggest that it might not be what I had in mind. Then of course,
when I don't use it, he'll pout for a week. I try to solve these little
problems by myself because he will "overkill" the solution and end up with
some contraption that is far too complicated. I DID find that the
Scarecrow people now make a "wall mount" for the head, but I'm not sure I
want it to be that permanent. But . . . we could use the wall mount on a 2
x 4 and still be able to move that around somewhat, right?

We have plenty pvc, I'm thinking of using that. I'll let
you know
what I end up doing.

Go to your local home depot and buy a 1/2" diameter piece of rebar. Pound it
into the dirt as far as you need then strap the scarecrow to it with wire.
That should solve both your problems.

I dunno, Joe.... that seems a little too simple. I don't really feel like
I've accomplished anything unless I have to toil over it and be very
frustrated with it throughout the process. Your solution makes sense, is
quick, simple, cheap and probably very effective. Wonder if I could live
with something along that theory?

Well, we finally found a good spot that works well and
we didn't need to raise the scarecrow. So far, no one
has gotten wet by accident. I was testing to see how
far the water would reach and got wet then :-)

Sue, you can still toil and improve on Joe's idea. ;o) Instead of wire, how
about velcro tape to hold it to the post? Mine is next to the cement patio
so doesn't have your problem.

Today I just hooked up the one in the lilypond, it's in sand, so we'll see
how much it moves overnight. ~ jan

Here's how I installed mine:

http://www.kissingfrogs.tv/scarecrow.html

I used the accessory bracket (hard to find) to mount it as the
blast it produces when it turns on is too much for the supplied stake.

I made a large dial so I can see if it's turned on before I step in
front of it.

Lost one Koi to a Heron before I installed it. None since. One Koi
got speared when I forgot to turn it on (he's since recovered.)

Awesome set up! What is the distance from the scarecrow to the far side
of the pond? In the photos it seems like a long way off, but in reality,
maybe not. I think the maximum sensitivity on the scarecrow is 35 feet,
right? Does the scarecrow get triggered if you walk on the far side of the
pond?

26 feet. The pond outside diameter is 17 feet.

Yes, I've tried it. But I can't guarantee that it will see a Heron
that far! However, the first Heron I saw in the pond was gigantic.
It looked half the size of the pond.

I do use a different sprinkler head than the one they supplied.
It seems to handle the pressure a bit better. The original one
wouldn't sweep back & forth, but just squirted in its original
direction. I think a Rain Bird head isn't meant to be on a
sprinkler circuit alone, it's just too much pressure and volume. My
line pressure isn't horribly high, it's just too much volume for one
head. It's working fine now. For the 3 second spray duration the
sprinkler makes one pass across its travel.

One fellow at the last Koi club meeting had a good idea. In addition
to hard-plumbing the water line to my Scarecrow, connect its output to
several heads surrounding the pond. That'll make sure I really get
wet!

Pretty slick there Steve, sure like the dial. I'm thinking to at least put
a dot of white on the little black dial. ~ jan
