Default Help... Dying Koi!

Where do I begin... ((Let's start with my pond stats))
I have a 1500 gal pond, with about 10 Koi, and a couple comets...
There are tons of plants, airation, and circulation...
I also use a UV filter (not sterilizer).

Several weeks ago (after some spawning), a couple of my Koi developed
ulcers... A "friend" of mine deciced to help me treat the ulcers with
"Anti-Ulcer" (he treated the entire pond). The problem is that he
treated for 2800 gallons, not 1500 gallons... When I noticed that my
fish were all gasping at the surface, I questioned my "friend", and
immediately did a partial water change. The fish seemed to be
happier...

The next couple of days, the temperature went from the 70's up into
the 90's (with lots of humidity). My fish started hiding under
things, and would not eat... Many of them also developed "white fuzzy
patches"... ((I assume this is either ich or fungus)). I've lost a
total of 5 fish...

WHAT CAN I DO??? Do you think that the "anti-ulcer" medication is
still effecting the fish?? How long do medications stay in a pond??
Should I use Formalin to treat the fungus/ich problem??

TIA

BTW...
I've increased the salt in my to so that it is on the high end of
"normal" ((according to my little salt tester)).
The nitrates, nitrites, ammonia, and pH are all in the "normal" range
too...

I would NOT do any more doctoring until someone
answers who is close to being a Koi Doctor. I would go to
www.koivet.com and read up on what doc has to say.

I'd do additional Large (40%) water changes .... Make SURE
that the TEMPERATURE of the water going is close to the
temperature of the pond water.....
Make SURE that you treat the water for chlorine/chloramines.

I don't know enough to tell you anymore right now....
I know a "friend" I'd like to shoot!!!!!

Default Help... Dying Koi!

Feel free to shout away Nedra... Maybe that will get me worked up
enough to "kill" my friend... He DID say that he would replace all of
the fish that die (I guess that's a good thing)... I don't think he
realizes just how expensive Koi can be (especially when they're about
14" in length...

Here's my afternoon update... The fish that were extremely sick have
been placed in a "hospital" tank ((with a high dose of salt & some
MelaFix))... The main pond received a 30-40% water change (to get
most of the culprit medication out)... I've added MAJOR airation to
the pond (since most meds deplete the oxygen)... So far, all seems
OK... Please keep your fingers crossed!!!!

Newbie question here...wouldn't an overdose of medication kill a bit faster?
It seems like gasping fish dieing days later with fuzz on them points to an
illness with the fish, and not an over medication. Just playing devil's
advocate, so we don't have to read about a ponder in jail for 1st degree
murder.

not really. what actually happens is the medication is incorrect for the problem.
nearly all the time problems with fish start with a parasite that is large enough to
breach the slime coat. then the bacteria are able to attack, and third is fungi.
breach of the slime coat is due to:
1. mechanical damage against rocks, from spawning, sucking plecos open the slime coat
2. thin or no slime coat (seen in columnaris infections), or poor quality slime coat
due to toxic water conditions. a thick slime coat is an indication of toxic water or
parasite infection.
3. the immune system is down or compromised and the slime coat does not have normal,
protective antibodies or anti-microbial proteins.
4. an abnormally large number of parasites can overwhelm even a good slime coat.
5. fish are carriers. they carry parasites in low numbers like ich and gyros.
normally they are under host control, but when the fish is stressed the parasites
overwhelm the host immunity and proliferate and cause disease.
Dumping the incorrect medication into the water stresses the fish. So treat for
parasites first, bacteria second and with medicated food UNLESS the fish can be
treated in a quarantine facility and closely monitored. Ingrid

Hi BV
Thanks for the input... I think that my problem was caused my the
over medication, since the negative reaction occurred within minutes
of "my friend" putting the "Anti-Ulcer" med into the pond... Every
day went down hill after that...
Hopefully, I can rectify the situation! ((soon))
