I don't know how warm a 1000 watt heater can make a 30 gallon tub, but that night, in the teens, dropped it to the point of the fish having ich soon after. Salt was added to 0.3% and saved all but one tiny guy who was brought inside and made it with warmth and treatment. He was smaller than a pea, so I couldn't resist. He's fine and swimming in a 15 gallon for now, vacationing inside for the winter. ~ jan Ahhh,. You had to go mention Ich, didn't you? About 35 years ago I got into the aquarium hobby thing. I had a 10 gal setup with angel fish and some mollies. I moved from Lousiana to Illinois in late November, 1966, carrying the fish in a styrofoam box. It sat on the floor in the front of the car heater. I spent the night in MO and left the fish in the car. The next day we drove another couple 100 miles to Springfield, with the fish in front of the heater. No one had told me to be careful of water temp changes. I set the fish up in an apartment that was overheated. No problem for two years. Then I moved them back to Louisiana 2/69. It was near zero when I left IL. and 70 when I got to LA. No problem. That winter I got a new aquarium book and read about ich. A couple of days later I found white spots on the mollies, then on the angels. ICH!!! I was able to cure them. That summer I read about tail rot ... guess what! I hate hearing about diseases ... it seems to start them up around me. :-) Happy New Year, all. dd |
