Default What happened to the Room?!

This used to be such a nice room to visit. After 9/11 things got nasty when
I responded to another post saying I thought it criminal to invade another
country that had nothing to do with 9/11, with no proof that they were a
threat to us. I would have thought things would have gone back to how it
had been by now. It really seems that the politics of hate has taken over
everywhere. Sadly even what had been safe havens such as this room.

I mostly lurk here and it seems that it's only the past month or two that
things have gotten really nasty. Doubtless the culprits will flame me for
even this message. However, those of us who want to carry on civil
converations still can. We just need to ignore those who think wrecking such
a lovely, supportive community is fun.

This isn't a political NG. Why not discuss ponds and fish instead. :-)

And we haven't had a political flame war for well over a year? DKat, give
it another month, as the north starts warming up, we'll all be outside
getting our gardens going. Last night I dreamed I heard a Pacific Tree
Frog. Since it got down to 24F I don't think they're awake yet.

Doubtless the culprits will flame me for even this message.

That's right, and not lower ourselves if we're compiled to answer them
back. Just keep it civil. If you read something and it gets you upset,
heart pounding, etc. don't reply till you've calmed down. Anger is simply,
hurt, frustration, or fear. One RPer has all 3 going on apparently,
hopefully he'll get over it and give advice without the bite someday.

We had a warm spell that completely left me unprepared for the 8" of snow we got
last night (yes I know that is NOTHING for those who live where 3' is the norm but
this is Long Island!). And it had just gotten to where I could see in the pond
(which I have to admit I have been avoiding over fear of what I will see since
things completely closed up after the last blizzard....).

So glad to hear your voice and to hear that the room hasn't gone over the edge.
It was a bit of a shock to step in after being gone for so long to not find it as
I remembered pre-flaming days of post 9/11.

Hi DKat,
Just takes a bit of extra time, after awhile it is easy
to flip past the disruptive stuff. Comes and goes in
my experience.

It isn't a room, it's a newsgroup. And the whole troll/nasty thing is
cyclic. There are people who feel that they can be a good less tolerant
and polite on the Net than they would be in a person.
And there are a good many other people who just cannot resist being drawn
into an obviously silly argument.
For me, I killfile, usually with a time limit, people who are constantly
unpleasant. Less often I killfile people who always extend the argument.
But you can do whatever you wish; the important thing is to not get sucked
in, and ignore the idiocy. Easier said than done.

IMHO, aside from the recent flood of Roy related garbage, this group is as
good as it's always been. Post your political thoughts with an OT: and
you'll be just fine. Especially during the winter, when pond talk is slow.

Its winter time, don't feed your fish, and don't the trolls.

Yes, everyone PLEASE just IGNORE the trolls. Responding in anyway just
encourages them.

Carol...I agree this is not a political group, but for the most part
rec.ponds has a fairly regular and long term membership, that often enjoys
each other's company and opinions whether it be on salting your pond, or
salting your fundamentalist neighbors. For the most part these posts are
prefixed with OT:, so you can avoid them if you like.

Oops! That was not meant to be a posting of a political thought... just a
bit of history as to why I disappeared for a couple of years (or so it felt
like). The political discussion at the time was a OT thread. That didn't
keep it from getting very ugly.

I eventually figured out that all the weird posts I was reading came from a
crossposting bunch connected to religion. Once I blocked all of those
posters the room looked quite normal (except for the weird interaction
between a couple that seemed out of character...).

Yes, I'm a firm believer in not feeding the trolls though at times it is
tempting to play at yanking their chains... I just kill file them which
helps cut down in how crowded the room is in any case.

Thanks for the reply. DK
