Granada is fabulous
Granada has finished off it's first flush with a cluster of large
blooms that takes my breath away every time I walk by. When I bought it last July, my mother didn't think it would live. Now it's stealing the show from the amaryllis. Pics: http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/bgs12345/...ics_02/Pics_03 Blue Girl has also come into bloom. This poor plant was a "rescue" from Home Depot. It would have been a poster child for shutting down the bagged rose trade - too much wax, virtually no roots, one cane severed by the string holding it in place, etc, etc. I figured she was already a ghost when I bought her, so I nicknamed her "Moaning Myrtle". I'm stunned she's still alive at all, never mind throwing out blooms. I know she doesn't have the roots for it, so I'm cutting her bloom and pruning off her other two buds later today. It seems a pity, but she's been such a fighter that I want to make sure she lives long enough to develop a good root system. |

I have a feeling that this one's going to keep a special place in your garden, even if it never goes wild. |

Now it's stealing the show from the amaryllis. What kinds of amryllis do you have? They are blooming now? Out here, they bloom (indoors) between Christmas and Easter. I have never been able to grow them outside on account of the bloody snails making mincemeat of them. Pics: http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/bgs12345/...ics_02/Pics_03 Beautiful. Very luminous. Blue Girl has also come into bloom. This poor plant was a "rescue" from Home Depot. .... so I nicknamed her "Moaning Myrtle". LOL! It is a real pity when a mauve/lilac/ligt purple rose is treated this way, especially, since some of them such as Sterling Silver never ever recover. Lots of people come to the conclusion that these roses are wimps when the truth is that they were abused in their foster homes before they reached their adopted parents. It is great that your Blue Girl is a survivor, and that she is trying to stay cheerful and alive. More power to her! -- Radika California USDA 9 / Sunset 15 |

I have a new rose named Blue Nile that is about to bloom. I'll try and scan a bloom for you. I think it will be right up your alley if you like Blue Girl. |

I have never been able to grow them outside on account of the bloody snails making mincemeat of them. I'm not sure of the variety, and neither is the former owner of my house. Someone he worked with was dividing them and brought him the extras. He had them planted in a circle around a pine tree, in full shade most of the day. The first spring I was here, I didn't see a single bloom. I moved about half of them to a spot with almost full sun, at the end of the walkway from the front door to the driveway. They've bloomed and multiplied like bunnies ever since. Late April to middle May is their blooming period. They're in that first pic with the Granada blooms. So far nothing has attacked them or my daffodils. But I've had to abandon all hope of ever growing tulips, and this year I've lost most of my lilies (over 100 of them in about 15 varieties) to things that go "munch" in the night. That has me nervous about planting the gladiolus bulbs that I got last week. Maybe I'll just wait until fall and plant helleborus instead. |
