Default Suppliers Of Garening Sundries

Hi folks... relatively new to gardening as a fun thing, but WOW have I
missed a few years of fun.

Since I don't have a car, getting bags / bales of things like compost home
is pretty impractical - so I'm looking for some online suppliers who will
happily deliver the odd bag or two of stuff now and then - can anyone
recommend a reliable supplier? I will need grit, compost, fertilizers
(non-animal) and vermiculite... obviously a supplier who can provide all or
most of those would be helpful, but individual suppliers are OK.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Regards,

Hi Jason

Don't you have businesses around you that do this? I am on the Isle of Wight
and we have one very large concern just up the road from us who will deliver
anything. They are a private concern and are so obliging it's almost unreal.

Then there are a few more such outfits not toooooooooooo far away.

Are you able to visit such places either on bike or public transport once
you have tracked them down from Yellow Pages and the like? Because if you
can visit, you could make a list as you go round and then have it delivered.

Don't know where you are, but along the south coast is an organisation
called SCATS, they have everything and will deliver.

Yellow Pages and your local Freebie Paper should throw something up.

The only local business I'm aware of is B&Q, and although they could
probably do the compost, I'm not sure they can do much else - I will resort
to them if necessary since they can also deliver large plant tubs. But their
delivery rates are a bit of a sting, and I'm not entirely happy with their
performance {:v)

I'm sure I could get to them, yes - but I must admit I'm a netaholic and
would like to be able to see what they stock online - but again, if needs
must...

I'll look into these options, thanks.

Are you referring to these people?: http://www.scatscountrystores.co.uk

If so, I'm afraid their web site doesn't seem very helpful but I could try
contacting them by e-mail and seeing if they can respond properly.

B & Q are fine for such as compost, sand, fences, pots, etc etc, but be very
careful of their plants. we opened our garden up earlier in the year and we
had some 'bare patches' which Joan wanted to fill and wanted some plants for
some hanging baskets. The quality of the plants were poor and had been
unattended and not watered properly :-((

SCATS is a great store, but is more geared to the farmer. Nevertheless the
stores themselves are a little Alladin's Cave :-)) Not sure about plants but
I expect they do seeds, BUT, you may have to buy by the Tonne bag ;-))

Hope that helps

No problem on the plants, wouldn't trust B&Q as far as I could spit {:v) I
bought my plants for next spring from Suttons Seeds (I prefer to grow from
seed / bulb for a fuller experience), bulbs from J Parker and so on. But
they only seem to offer a limited range of things like compost, and none of
the other things as far as I could see - shame. You'd think they'd have a
good range of the materials gardeners need to put their seeds in!

Hopefully SCATS will respond to my e-mail...

Take a look at http://www.kayshorticulture.com/

Their web site used to be a mess but seems to have improved, not sure about
their catalogue, but it does include everything for the gardener and they
are a good firm to deal with, if you can't find something then phone them, I
bet it's in the catalogue somewhere.

Why? Most garden centres will deliver, well the ones that do posts,
fencing and so on. Certainly in our area South Heath Garden Centre and
many others deliver for free. Why not ask?
