tastey. Would the seed be viable to grow ?? How do I seperate the seed from the pulp ?? What do the seed look like ??? |

What do the seed look like ??? Judging by the one growing out of my back door frame all you'd need to do is pick most of the pulp off the seeds and sow shallowly in gritty compost. I don't know how true they breed though and I guess you might want a cultivar more suited to the UK - in Bristol there are several huge self-sown fig trees by the river, but I don't think they bear viable fruit .... .. |

What do the seed look like ??? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Fig that you eat is not a true fruit. You eat the swollen stalk. The whole 'fruit' is turned inside-out so that the fruits are on the inside. These are drupes and it is their stones that give the gritty feel. Pollination is achieved by a minute moth entering at the eye. I don't see this happening in the UK. If you have good ripe figs, then leave well alone and be grateful~~ You have done well. Best Wishes Brian.. |

The message
from iamwhatiam contains these words: I have some figs in the garden that are very ripe, and sweet and tastey. Would the seed be viable to grow ?? Probably. How do I seperate the seed from the pulp ?? Why do you need to ask? What do the seed look like ??? Tiny globes about the size of hundreds and thousands. And yes, ones taken from dried figs grow like weeds. But you'd be far better either taking cuttings or layering the end of a branch. -- Rusty horrid dot squeak snailything zetnet point co full-stop uk http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/hi-fi/ |

The seeds are the things inside the fruits that look like seeds. You can separate them from the pulp by removing them from the pulp. Viable seeds will germinate if they're viable. -- Mike. |

Your figs won't have any seed as the fig wasp which pollinates the fig doesn't live in this country. If you want to propagate, you'd do it more easily by air layering. Scrape the bark a bit, wrap some moist compost around, and secure the whole lot with clingfilm. When roots have made their way through the compost and to the clingfilm wrapping, you can prune the branch off and pot it up as a new plant. Probably a bit late in the season to do it this year, but it won't do major damage if it doean't work, so you could give it a go. -- Kay "Do not insult the crocodile until you have crossed the river" |

I didn't think they could. -- Kay "Do not insult the crocodile until you have crossed the river" |
