Well, after all those scares for a 'mother of all winters', it seems
as though the forecast for a really cold one has been significantly
downgraded. The most recent view from Metcheck (the most pessimistic
forecaster) is that the winter mean for most of us will be about the
same or marginally warmer (about 0.25C.) than the 1982-2003 norm,
while in Ireland it will be as much as half a degree warmer. This is
in sharp contrast to what we were being led to believe a month ago.
They are still forecasting a harsh one for parts of mainland Europe,
but that is unlikely to affect us. So its as you were folks!

Have the met Office told Ken Livingstone yet? ISTR he was talking about
another 1962/3!!

from what I read they said 'coldest in the last 10 years'. Which isnt that
cold.
Not sure where he got the 62/3 from, unless thats been misreported.

Anyway, whatever 'metcheck' say, here is what the Met Office is saying

"Forecast updated 24 Oct 2005
Our predictions continue to indicate a colder than average winter for much
of Europe. If this holds true, parts of the UK - especially southern
regions - are expected to have temperatures below normal."

So it seems they havent changed their forecast...yet?

| Too much seaweed is being converted to fertiliser.

By the bovine processing route, you mean? That sounds very likely.

The message
from "JennyC" contains these words:

I vividly recall the winter, especially roundabout Xmas, of 1962/3
the snow in Stevenage has up to one knees........my then boyfriend struggled
over on his bike from a nearby village with my present ..... :~)

I was hitch-hiking to the Highlands when the blizzard started.
Fortunately, it started in the south and worked its way up the country,
only catching me up at Shap. From a bit north of Glasgow there was no
snow, and at Mallaig on New Year's Eve and N'eer's Day I was in
shirtsleeves.

Interesting that you had snow at Christmas. We were in Leicester during this
Winter and the bad weather started with a severe and very white frost on
Boxing Day 1962. The snow came later, but the temperature didn't go above
freezing until nearly Easter and it felt quite warm then!!

Apparently they've just updated their forecast from a 60% probability
of a colder than average winter to an 80% probability of an average or
warmer than average winter. As to whether we get hit by cold European
weather, that all depends upon how active the Atlantic remains.

What will it be like in the UK after January?

If that is correct, we should give them three (Bronx) cheers for
managing to make HMG look statistically competent.
