This was discussed on GQT today also. Did Ihear right that Carol
Klein's talks on plants are only availble to digital viewers? That's
not fair.
DG is certainly out of favour for his compost adverts!

Having had a look ahead at the Sky programme guide and looked at the
programme descriptions for each night's coverage of Chelsea I had
detected a change in emphasis.

Hopefully there will be a better balance.

Anyone going to be there on Thursday?

Yes - my very first visit to Chelsea. I just hope the weather forecast
improves [1] and that the site is not too muddy.

[1] still we do need the rain so shouldn't complain.

Looking at that list of presenters I'll bet Dr Stefan Buczacki
is still kicking himself.

Trying to lure the GQT regulars away to Classic FM, must be one
of the worst career moves made by anyone, in a very long time.

He's not even mentioned on the BBC Gardening Presenters page
either. Totally written out of history. Though he's still alive
and kicking, apparently.

Shame Roy Lancaster never got a mention however, a very
knowledgable plantsman in the opinion of many.

The design he submitted for this year's Chelsea was rejected, so that
may have had some bearing on the matter, too.

Thanks, Pam. It does show that if enough people put enough pressure
on, we CAN make a difference and get the sort of programmes viewers
want to see, not just the kind that producers want to mess about with!
Maybe, at last, we shall have a return to gardening programmes that are
about plants and gardens, not about talking heads.
I've always thought that Mike Nelhams of the Abbey Gardens on Tresco
and Keith Wiley, late of The Garden House at Buckland Monachorum,
would be excellent TV garden presenters, too.

Anyone going to be there on Thursday?

No, we're hoping to go to Hampton Court on 5th July, all being well.

Hooray for that news, and well done Sacha et al. So somebody was
listening after all! It'll be interesting to see how they've tackled
changes to this year's coverage.

I see the Independent's reporters are among those who don't know the
difference between a Usenet newsgroup and an online message board, but
I'm glad the "gurning tv presenters" quote got mentioned. That
definitely summed the frustration up in one memorable phrase!

To be fair to the writers of that piece, I don't think they'd used
newsgroups before! David Randall rang me on Thursday and told me that
the complaints had been taken seriously and were having an effect.
IIRC, he said that his brother had said something about complaints so
he (DR) decided to start researching the subject and a computer session
turned up urg. He's a keen gardener himself and is as frustrated as
most of us by the poor coverage of such shows as Chelsea in the past.

Most of the coverage on Chelsea is not about REAL gardening - it's the
same as those instant garden makeover TV programs.

Certainly. Meanwhile, back at the box...I rate it "so far, so good".
Plenty of plants, and I very much liked the Beardshaw background to his
exhibit. And those wonderful kids, and of course their great teacher,
with their orchids! The helicopter bit with Swift pretending to spot
Titch made my heart sink, though: "Uh-oh! Here they go again!" But in
fact they didn't, by and large.

I wondered why the expensive borehole (the drought precautions were
inevitably, and genuinely, funny given the weather) so close to the
river. Is the river water brackish at Chelsea? (Shows how much I know,
I suppose.)
