What ... I'm not sure what I wrote ... stake ... yes, stake, like
staking with a cane. Hmmm... you've given me the giggles but I wish I
knew why I'm giggling. It conjured up me staking each individual
sprouts in their lil' heart )))

Sun's come out now, better grab the moment hey! Another bed to dig
over.

Well we saw it! In it's glorious eclipse - clear and we were all in
the pub holding a pint of Leffe to it. Though we didn't see it
clearing again. The clouds arrived and we didn't see anything more.
Magic though )

When the next one?

Do you not? Good grief, mine fall over all the time, though it doesn't
help having fat pigeons landing on them. It must be the variety I guess.
Though I have tried several different types over the years.

Yes, there's quite a variation in height. The write-up of the RHS trials
is useful and for most AGM varieties gives details of height or growth
habit:

With the amount of clay in my garden, it's like setting them in cement!

But so is mine, clay and flint I mean. The sprouts and calabrese all
fall/bend over and I have to put quite strong stakes in to support them.
What varieties do you grow?

Um yes (hello Janet by the way) I used the RHS report to grow those that
they said didn't need staking.
They did ..................

Whichever variety the nurseryman was selling that year...?

I never paid much attention, TBH! *G

Hi Janet, I must admit that mine flop over somewhat but the shorter ones
less so. I accept a certain amount of leaning but my veg area is well
out of the way so it doesn't matter too much if it looks a bit chaotic.
It doesn't seem to hurt the sprouts too much. From memory, Oliver, which
is very early and stands well, stays pretty upright.

Oh good for him

I'll give him a try though I guess I generally try and go for flavour
first or it doesn't seem worth growing my own stuff!

I think you'll find the flavour is good . I've deserted Peer Gynt in
favour of Oliver as a an early sprout.

Good luck
