This seems absurdly cheap, though you will probably need more
cable. At 1 kW, it should keep you warm too:
http://www.screwfix.com/prods/14558/...0W-Site-Light#

I think I might go for this one over the other secuirty type lights as it
seems to be much brighter and has a stand

how much electricity will it use?

Well, as it is a 1 kW load, it will use one unit per hour.
Electricity cost varies between suppliers and areas, but will be
upwards of 10p per unit.

Chris

Bit of an overkill on light I would say. With the stand being so short in
height, all it will do is make it very very bright in a 'smallish' area.
Yes it will light a lot of an area, but 2 x 500 watts is too much.

I would advise the OP to go and have a look at a small building site,
factory forecourt or factory security light and see just how much light
comes out from one 300 or 500 watt light.

If the OP can put the stand on a shed or flat roof of an outbuilding, then
it will spread more.

Just make sure that none of the light falls outside your garden - that is a
very antisocial thing to do.

A normal 13 amp extension cable will take the load OK, but you
shouldn't use it outdoors because the sockets are not waterproof. If
they get damp you could be in for a very 'enlivening' experience.
You must in any case use an RCD "residual current device" (available
for DIY stores), but it may not protect you under all circumstances.
(I'm sorry if my comments sound negative, but I'm just trying to
protect you!)

can you link to a suitable one on screwfix?

we have an RCD on our main fuse box - i guess it only works for things
directly attached to the fusebox (i.e shower/cooker) rather than things
on the plugs?

It will almost certainly work for anything plugged into a 13 A socket.
Lights are often not on an RCD, so they don't go out if the RCD trips.

In my garamge, I have a 6 way consumer unit, with each circuit having
its *combined* 30 mA RCD and overcurrent trip. That is the best
solution, as it means if the RCD trips, everything not on that circuit
runs ok. The problem with that approach is the cost. 6 combined RCD/over
current trips cost a *lot* more than one RCD and 6 overcurrent trips.

At night time, however, landscape lighting can make it possible. Proper placement of garden lights to illuminate the way a garden can add an entirely different point of view of its visual style.

You don't live in a town, do you?

Almost my entire garden is lit up all night, by a streetlight at the front another streetlight at the side the other side of a large church, by the security lights of the Church, and by a delightful neighbour at the far end of the garden whose security light is set at such an angle that it blinds us when we come down the steps from our back door.
