Mine will get a prune this weekend Christina, I'll take them down to
around 4 feet high and then in Spring, I will prune, hard.

The wild one outside our kitchen window has been cut back hard twice
this year. I *think* the men working on the wall slates may have
finished it off but I'm not betting on it!

I've always been told that the best time to prune buddlias is in the
daylight .........

I'd agree with that. Short of napalm, heaven knows what kills them off!

I think we have finally killed off the buddlia that was in our garden
when we moved in 6 years ago. It was one of those grubby pale lilacy
colour ones which grow everywhere - don't get me wrong, I like buddlia,
but I like the white, dark purple or reddish coloured ones. The lilacy
one just reminds me of railway lines!

Lots of feeding and watering :-)

More seriously, they are very prone to fungal infections of their
roots when grown in rich, damp conditions. Under such circumstances,
they are short-lived plants. Beyond that, digging them out below
soil level.

But I don't want to kill them off! Sitting in a garden chair beside my
buddleias this summer, seeing them covered in red admirals, peacocks,
painted ladies was one of life's richest moments.
