Default Apple juice

Along with, I suspect, many others I have a bumper crop of apples. Not so
much for this year, but for if/when I get another bumper crop any
suggestions for making and storing apple juice? Where can I get a good
juicer that will deal with a lot of apples and that will last for a
number of years? any help appreciated.

Yes and the presses are good too. After the press a pulper to turn whole
apples to smush before pressing will greatly increase efficiency - but we
may be getting ahead of ourselves, this is expensive gear for pressing tens
of gallons of juice outdoors and the juice doesn't keep as you pointed out.
It may be better to buy one of the better kitchen counter top juicers from
amazon for 70 or 80 quid if you want tens of pints not tens of gallons.

Storing you have three choices:

cider
freezing
pasteurising

First two are obvious. Pasteurising involves raising the temperature of the
juice and keeping it there long enough to kill yeasts and bacteria. It's a
simple enough process but a heck of a long job to get through any quantity
in a domestic kitchen.

You don't say where you are located, but I guess it is probably
somewhere in the UK!

If there is a craft cider maker near you they may be prepared to press
your fruit for you at so much per gallon.

Go to http://www.ciderandperry.co.uk/ and click on 'Cider farms'.

There are two easy possibilities
a) cook the fruit first before juicing - but this affects the flavour
b) freeze the fruit first - just put it in carrier bags in the
deepfreeze for a day or so. Doesn't affect the flavour, and only ties up
the deepfreeze space for a couple of days.
