scrub the roots and lightly roast them, grind,
and use as a coffee substitute;

Do they contain caffeine?

No.
I consider dandelions a welcome crop _ I can eat the young leaves in salad,
make wine from the flowers and when they get older I throw them in to my
chickens who devour them with gusto and it makes the yolks of their eggs
more orange which my customers like.

Then they are *not* a coffee substitute! ;- If I want brown warm water with
no drugs, a handful of earth would be quicker.

I agree - I love the dandelions in our lawn - and the daisies and the
whatever-they're called blue things.

There was a time when I was young, that I went with the selective
weedkiller - but no more - the array of colours add interested to a green
canvas.

No weedkiller has touched my land for 25 years.
If there is a weed I don't want (the greater celadine I made a mistake in
introducing, for example) I will just pull it up.
I do not want dangerous chemicals in my soil.

I noticed that last weekend. And they are going to seed awfully quickly,
too! Unless I'm very much mistaken, my strawberry patch went from not
flowering to in seed within the space of a week.

Verdone kills all plants which are not grass!

Oh no it doesn't. Quite a few common garden weeds are immune to
Verdone

If you want the leaves for eating then you should grow them in the
dark, a bucket or something of that ilk placed over them when they are
just starting to grow.

Totally agree, why waste them? I made some dandelion flower wine (this is
exactly the time to pluck them) I can't say it was my best for taste, but
it was certainly -hic- alcoholic.

Harsh winters won't affect them! *Here, in western Canada, the grass dies
back over winter and most of my lawn is brown atm. *However, this gives the
dandelions a head start in the spring. *They are regarded as a pest here and
if you don't keep them under control and someone complains, the city will
come and cut your lawn and charge you a hefy fee/fine for doing it.
However, they can't keep their own lands under control and the boulevards
will soon be a mass of bright yellow followed a few days later by carpets of
unsightly seed heads. *Weed 'n' Feed is not easy to find now and there is a
hairshirted alderman who wants to ban 2-4-D. *The answer may be one of
these:http://www.leevalley.com/en/garden/p...t=2,2300,44822...

I think it's that one.

Very cute - I even ran the mower around them - got a few little patches.
