For some reason on the Google groups, a thread started in the US can
have picures emailed to it and they will appear. But the facitlty is
not available in the UK. Dunno why.

Try a dfferent newsreader or two. They all display newgroups
differently and have various options for display.

The latest Windows Live Mail does that although this being a non-binary
Newsgroup you can't attach photos. For photos I use Flickr and simply post a
link.
Can't stand web based forums etc. myself. Much too cumbersome in most cases.

One advantage of them being cumbersome is that they are not used as a
'public email facility' by the members with 'personal chat'. ... :-((

Of course some are not cumbersome, but can supply 'personal chat' via
private messaging. :-)
Newsgroups are great, I have been using them for over 25 years,
(anyone remember BB boards and Blue wave software?) The problem is
being ISP based , some of the big providers, are cutting back , or not
keeping postings as long as they were.
That's why web based forums, where 'admin's' have full control, have
now become the norm. Are they better, its all down to the content, but
they can supply pictures, video, and an archive of info.

So both have a place on my computer.

Rumour has it that it is possible to adjust the settings of Windows
Live Mail in order to get proper Usenet quoting.
.........................

Really! Do please tell me how it's done, I've spent ages trying every
combination of adjustments to try to cure the problem.

Thanks. Could be okay. I see there is a "General Gardening" topic header
one can post to.

Of course, I worry that when I get back to a thread I've started, which
could be a week or so sometimes, no-one picks up on my further comments
because no-one is following the thread.

Different with forums, because every-time you post, it appears at top
for people to see.

Windows Live Mail does that with Newsgroups, any reply to a thread puts that
thread up the top and it's highlighted until you read it or you move out of
the Ng concerned.
