I inherited this from my mother, and have no idea what it is. Any idea,
anyone?

It would be nice to know what care it's meant to be getting, though this is
the second year it has flowered so it can't be too unhappy...

Hello

This flower may be unfamiliar to the Western ppl, but among the Asians
it is popular.
It's a 'scarlet Kaffir lily' (one of orchid species).
If you've ever watch the picture of an anual meeting of Chinsese
Congress,
You will notice tons of them are placed here and there in the hall.
They so love red color.

It is very common over here, often seen in National Trust houses and similar
as specimen plants and small plants are always available in most Garden
Centres. It is true that the yellow flowered ones are rarely seen . It is
not an orchid.

In this country Kaffir Lily is a somewhat archaic name for Schizostylis
coccinea. That is neither an orchid, nor the plant in the photograph;
nor is the plant in the photograph an orchid.

(Wikipedia has it as Hesperantha coccinea, River Lily or Crimson Flag.)

If you've ever watch the picture of an anual meeting of Chinsese
Congress,
You will notice that many of them are placed here and there in the

It's *not* an orchid. It's in the Amaryllidaceae, the daffodil family.

It's well known in the west, too - as a houseplant in england, in street plantings in, for example, southern Portugal.

Hi Kay

After i've noticed a mistake about an orchid, i deleted this post.
but it was too late. it had already sent to all the readers.
Every time i saw its orchid-like roots, i had an idea it belongs to
orchid.
If there's anything that is not accurate in the lines i had told you
about things in the west,
plz forgive my ignorance.

You may have posted your response to the wrong message. There was
another recent enquiry (but if I recall correctly that was on
rec.gardens) about a plant which had structures which could have been
confused for orchid pseudobulbs.

Don't worry, we all make mistakes - as long as *someone* corrects it, it's not a problem. I think they're a S African plant, sop it was intereesting to see about them being popular in the East.
