One is a strong 'caged' version from The Nuttery (got it on ebay at a
good price). The other has no cage, so great spotted woodpeckers
still come and visit it, but it's made with a tough ceramic top and
bottom and the body is of perforated steel rather than wire. You undo
a wing-nut and take the base off to refill.
It's proved strong enough to foil the blighters even after several
year's use. The young ones do come and try a few times before they
learn they can't tear this one open no matter what they do - after
that they leave it alone. I can't remember the make now, but I found
it in a local garden centre.

Yours sounds good Sue, but sadly too little information to locate it!

I did try and Google up something similar but I can't find one like it
on the market now, either.

The sprung-loaded type ones that close off the nuts to anything heavy as
a squirrel look as though they might work. Something like this, perhaps?
http://gardenbirdfeeder.co.uk/acatal...f_Feeders.html

Good luck with the search anyway. Hope you find a solution - it's not as
if bird food costs peanuts these days. :-/

We also had one of the ceramic and perforated steel peanut feeders. I
looked for a replacement a while ago, as the ceramic top was broken
when the feeder fell (or was pushed!).

We have had a 'Squirrel Buster Plus' feeder as on the link above for
some years now. The plastic perch ring has been destroyed by squirrels
twice, but there are alloy perches which the birds do use without the
ring. I have not been in a position to check if certain birds are
discouraged by lack of a perch ring. NB When I got the replacement
perch ring, I was told it was not included in the lifetime guarantee.

The squirrels cannot get at the food directly from the feeder, unless
it is hung somewhere they can get to it side-on, e.g. a close-by
branch. It is a large feeder, so you need something quite high and
strong enough to take the weight when full. As we wanted to see the
birds, we resorted to getting a tree surgeon (here to do other work)
to fix a chain on a sturdy branch high up, so it dropped in a space
between lower branches.

Gardening on Wilts/Somerset border
on slightly alkaline clay.

Thanks for that Cotula, I was on the point of ordering one. When you say
the Buster Plus is large, how long do you think it is? I have tried the
ceramic topped ones, but found that the top did not last long, I suspect
not totally frost proof!

Sorry to take so long to respond - life intruded!

Thanks for all the replies and help on this one. I decided to go for the
"Squirrel Buster" versions from Gardenbirdfeeder.co.uk. I am hoping it
was not a mistake, all I got was an email from worldpay saying the money
had gone and it was an order from Gardenbirdfeeder, no mention of what I
had ordered. There was however an email address for the company to which
I sent a query, like dropping a pound coin down a bottomless well and
waiting for the splash. I tried to email them from their contact info on
their we page, it does not work. So I would advise anyone thinking of
using them to think very carefully, though there may be people here who
have and are happy with them.

This is becominjg a rapidly increasingly problem on the net. I estimate that
up to 50% of the
marketing messages on the net are either inertia selling or just plain
fraudulent. I will only
deal with well tried companies such as Amazon or companies that are happy to
provided all confirmations and contact details BEFORE they ask for your card
details. Honest companies will be only too happy to provide details. It
really is
caveat emptor these days - I know, I've been caught too.

Stay hopeful. I did a google search, they seem to have been around awhile, and I couldn't find any complaints against them, so you may be OK. If not, and you can find a UK snailmail address for them, then Trading Standards can be very helpful.

Could be something as simple as their email is down atm, so give them a
chance, but if you don't get any email response there's a postal address
and phone number to try:

As a last resort in the event of no contact and the birdfeeder not
turning up within reasonable time, payment can always be claimed back
from your card company. You just fill in a form and give them all the
info, payment ref numbers and photocopies of anything relevant. I had to
do it once when a previous isp tried it on by taking an extra month's
payment after I'd cancelled an account, the card co looked into it and
the payment was reversed.

That is a legal requirement for credit cards, and I think only applies if the sum is over £100. Anything else (less than £100, or a debit card) is based on the goodwill of the card company.

It never occurred to me about a lower limit but I believe you're right.
However, you don't get if you never ask. It was only £15 I was
incorrectly charged, but it was more the principle than the amount and I
could prove they were in the wrong. The cc company reversed the charge
without a fuss - they must have been having an unusual excess of
goodwill that day.

Does anyone make a birdproof squirrel feeder? I don't like
