Dont the answer to the second part but you definately can.
How I know is a strange thing really - my wife and I were looking at going
to barbados over the summer and one of the hotels we were thinking about
booking is called Bougainvillea - the place is full of the stuff !

Grow it in a pot and overwinter in a frost free place.

Only in the summer, full sun needed. Otherwise during the winter keep in a
frost free and very light place and keep on the dry side.
Friend has a small collection which he deals with in that way and they seem
to thrive.

True. Much of the tropics is. But you have missed the part of the
title that said "in the UK". No way, Jose.

There are some outdoor plants down here (not in my garden!), but to be
honest they are are shadow of what you see in sunny climes so I am not
convinced its worth the effort, They do best on south walls with a large
overhang which keeps them dry (you have to water in summer)
As to the second part of the question, the best types are based on B.
spectabilis as that has a natural cold dormant period. the other two species
are less cold tolerant and more all year round flowering (in the uk non
flowering!)

Interesting. But just until the first significant winter - even
Cornwall gets them on occasion!

We have two in pots in the Conservatory here in Cornwall. OK outisde
in the summer, and then back inside. I don't think they'd prosper
outside permamently, even here in Cornwall.

I suppose you might just get away with it tucked into one of those South
facing valleys down there but I doubt it.
I wonder if Dave Poole has them growing in his garden. :-)
Dave, where are you?

He has previously posted that he does indeed have one flowering outside, but
I think micro climates such as he has are rare even in the SW

We have just had one :~), lost allsorts of stuff I had been quite smug
about! presently growing on several Pandoreas and Hibbertias to replace
plants (although I notice one or two trying from the base, they never come
to much the second time) and trying something's I have not previously tried
outside, I sometimes plant out batches of seed grown plants to allow the
winter to select the hardiest forms before propagating (sometimes at the
expense of flower colour/size!)
Life would be simpler If I stuck to the straight and narrow :~)

I saw one in an open fronted glass porch in Bexley when I was judging
London in Bloom last year. The owners said they'd had it there for
about 8 years without many problems. The porch faced south and was
quite well protected.

Interesting. That 8 years corresponds to the current warm spell,
so it sounds worth trying until and unless we go back to the more
'traditional' winters. But that corresponds pretty closely to a cold
conservatory.

Brilliant Pete!!! I've been thinking what to tell a lady to plant in her
open ended S. facing glass porch out in Essex.
