I've got the most smelly...
plant in the world! I bought 3 bulbs at a local garden show a few weeks ago.
Couldn't remember what they were called. Popped them in a pot, and out shot these very narrow spikes. When one got to about 30 cm tall, the outer layer of the 'spike' peeled back. Inside was dark green with bright orange spots. Very nice. However, the smell it produce is outrageous .. especially as they are in my conservatory which is stuffed full of plants right now and gets extremely hot and humid during the day. Even the cats don't go in there any more because of the smell! And so far, only one has 'peeled' so I've got the other 2 to exhibit themselves! - h |

I've got the most smelly...
The message
from "H" contains these words: I/we wish :-(((((((((( *please*, can we make this a cat-free thread? I think you just have... I want to know is what this awful-smelling plant is called. Anyone got any ideas? I could make a few suggestions - but they'd be libellous. There's something which is probably even smellier which was described on a Radio 4 programme a long time ago: it looked like a vast flower growing on the jungle floor, and smelly like a very ripe cadaver. Try googling on 'bulb' 'smell' (or 'stench'?) and any other keywords which spring to mind. -- Tony Replace solidi with dots to reply: tony/anson snailything zetnet/co/uk http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/hi-fi |

I don't much like it when dogs bark or yelp for hours on end, but I don't really get obsessed about it and, although I'm not particularly a dog lover I certainly wouldn't refer to them as vermin or suggest that their owners are all tarred with the same brush, and I'm sure you and your dog(s) would be an exception anyway...... Hi Helen,
Your smelly plant sounds very much like an Arum. Arum dioscoridis. I have three in my garden and they are very smelly. Known as "The Dead Horse Arum", they are certainly not for the feint hearted gardener. Type Arum dioscoridis into your browser and get all the pictures and info. Most of them smell a tad. Anita |

They stop smelling when they've finished flowering. Yes, that's what I thought. Aren't they in the Arum family the same as that huge Titan arum at Kew with the biggest (and smelliest) flower in the world? I had in a previous garden and after it flowered indoors I planted it outside in a sunny and moist spot and it multiplied over the few years into a clump, the original "bulb" making up into a huge lump, but I can never remember it flowering again, suppose it must have and I just missed it. -- Bob www.pooleygreengrowers.org.uk/ about an Allotment site in Runnymede fighting for it's existence. |
