... Can I prune soon ? Douglas I'm no expert but I use the 2 and 6 rule. In the sixth month (June) you prune side shoots to 6 leaves and in the second month (February) you prune back further to 2 leaves. That is for an established wisteria which is flowering. Until then I think you can prune whenever you feel like it to get the form right. -- Martin & Anna Sykes ( Remove x's when replying ) http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~sykesm |

writes to encourage the flowering spurs and buds to grow. Global warming has meant that our wisteria has not come into open flower for 8 years now: every year it comes into bud much too early, and then we have a frost and that's it Just a couple of miles away they seem to bud a bit later and the flowers are magnificent. I have wondered whether there might be some way to prune it to delay bud formation somehow? Klara Gatwick basin -- |

If it's against a wall then it shouldn't be too difficult to devise something that can be put up and removed easily. If it's out in the open, like the one at the Saville Garden which has the same problem you describe, you could throw some fleece over it on cold nights although you would need to weigh the edges down. -- Regards Bob Use a useful Screen Saver... http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/ and find intelligent life amongst the stars, there's bugger all down here. |

Thanks for this suggestion! It is against a wall, but it's pretty old and big - every year it attacks our gutters, the climbing rose, the quince, and everything else in reach.... It should perhaps be possible to hang something between the windows, but it would be a huge job to remove it every morning. Do you suppose it would work just to cover it (well, some of it, at least) once the buds swell, and leave it on until they open (and then hope for a frost-free fortnight)? Klara -- |
