Hi again

Could any of you recommend a supplier of quality topsoil in Ayrshire?
I think I'm going to need around 4 - 6 tonnes of the stuff to fill the
new raised veggie beds we've created, and from a quick google (and a
trawl through the yellow pages) prices seem to vary considerably. My
guess is that the lower the price, the lower the quality goes, and as
I don't want to have to break down large lumps of clay (that's why
we're building the beds in the first place), I'm prepared to pay a bit
extra for something I know will be good for the job. Rolawn seem to
offer a high quality 'blended loam' although at a high price, so does
anyone know of a comparable quality product from a lesser known name
who might be a bit cheaper?

Find out where the local landscapers go. 'blended loam' from a good
supplier should be good. The original soil will probably be from
agricultural land being turned over to development and will be
screened so largely free of rocks, perennial weeds etc and will have
some ameliorators added, things like sharp grit/sand, mushroom compost
etc.

After an hour or so ringing around yesterday, being quoted prices from
£60 per tonne down to £ 7 - eventually settled on £21 / tonne inc VAT,
delivered. (I'd have had to collect the £7 deal myself, and the
flatbed hire made it more expensive). I'll let you know how it turns
out on Monday.

*Ouch* It's the small quantity that makes it expensive.Big full loads
are much cheaper.

I'm trying to find a supplier of decent topsoil around the Barrhill area of South Ayrshire . Would you drop me a line or number with the details of your suppliers / contacts. I'm new to the area and I'm struggling to find anyone,

Hi Tim - we're similarly new to Ayrshire (just south of Ayr, mix of heavy clay/stones in our soil) and doing just what you have done. Can you provide the info on supplier and an update of how good it was when it arrived please?
Also can you tell me what you used for creating your raised beds - was it railway sleepers (without creosote!) and if so, again where did you source them? Any other relevant info would be much appreciated.
