The bowel can
hold 8 mixed size chestnuts.

Will it hold a gerbil, too?

Each evening I put out chestnuts for the local squirrel. The bowel can
hold 8 mixed size chestnuts. Each morning I noticed that only a small
number were taken. I decided to put out 7, in the morning 3 were left.
The next morning I put out 6, it left 2. For the last week I have put
out 5, it always leaves one taking only 4. This raises the questions;
why does this squirrel only take 4 chestnuts? can this squirrel count?
It takes them away one at a time.

Every year I fight the tree rats and rats with hooves for my chestnuts.
This year they won with me only getting enough to stuff the Thanksgiving
turkey and a few snacks. One year I gave a bag to a friend, and what he did
was feed the squirrels around his apartment. Last chestnuts I ever gave
him. Don't know where you get yours

Squirrels are much smarter than people know. We have one who comes to the back
door screen and taps when it's out of peanuts. I never noticed counting, but it
somehow knows the peanuts come from inside the house and they know where the
door is. My guess, they are smart.

Interesting question. :-) Maybe he just has 4 places to hide them? It
seems very untypical for squirrels to judge their needs and wants so
precisely. Around here they eat, or rather spoil, a lot of pecans --
take one bite and throw away the nut; then take another and another
and do the same. Your squirrel sounds like a solid citizen.

I manage to get a large number of walnuts from my tree by catching the
damned tree rats and disposing of them, it's more satisfying to kill
the females cos each one of those you kil, you are effectively killing
a thousand or so.

Get a rat/mink trap from Mole Valley Farmers in Somerset, they have a
branch in Bridgewater.

Trapping in my Hav-a-hart and release in park last year got me no
walnuts.
Next year, I will trap and collar trees. In 20 years, I've gotten one
walnut.
Tree rats eat them on tree when green. Killing would be option I would
use except wife objects. Chestnuts were sparse this year and
squirrels and deer got most. Frustrating.

Tell her about the farmer who collected his new bride from the station.

He helped her up into the gig and they started off. At a crossroads, the
horse refused to stop, nearly causing an accident. The farmer got down,
held the bridle and snarled at the horse: "That's once!"

A short distance further on, a bird flew across in front of them, and
the horse shied. The farmer got down, held the bridle and snarled at the
horse: "That's twice!"

A bit further on, the horse spied some rather succulent-looking grass on
the other side of the road, and despite the farmer's efforts on the
reins, pulled the gig right up the verge. The farmer reached under the
seat in the back and got out a shotgun, got down, held the bridle and
snarled at the horse: "That's three times!" and shot it.

"Oh, you cruel, cruel man!" cried the new bride.

"That's once...!" said the farmer.

A person would only be an idiot to feed grey squirrels, if he/she had some
valid reason to want to keep them off his/her property. I would have thought
you would have wanted other people to attract squirrels away from your
walnuts by feeding them elsewhere?

Provision of a preferred sacrificial crop at critical times is also a pest
control measure, after all.
