This is definitely a good idea.

In 1995 some neighbours and I bought a piece of field adjoining our houses
from a farmer. A condition of the change of use was that we put in a double
row of British native species along the boundary (about 300m). We did it as a
cooperative project. I organised the plants from a specialist nursery in
Kent. Sorry I have mislaied the name. They supplied 25% Hawthorn, 25%
Blackthorn, and the remaining 50% was a mixture of 7 other species. Everyone
has looked after the hedge while it got established, and now there is 300 m
of super hedge about 7 ft high.

John

Great idea. I recommend Buckingham Nurseries..but I don't have my
catalogue to hand to give you the address. You'll find it easily with a
websearch.

When you've done your garden webpages, why not contact cormaic about
joining this newsgroup's garden webpage webring? You'll find a link to
it in his sig. Welcome to urg.

Sorry to piggy back on Janet's reply, Mark, but your original posting
hasn't yet shown up on my server. We did exactly the same thing and
planted a double row of native hedge plants about March 2000 and
ordered ours from BTCV Enterprises. Although they have a web site
www.btcv.org they don't appear to take orders online for plants,
but their phone number to order a catalogue is 01302 572200, Fax 01302
310167. They do a mixed hedgerow collection of 50 plants at GBP 18.40
plus delivery. We've been very pleased with ours, although may well
extend it through a local nursery to save delivery charges.

A very good idea. If you have the ability it is also a very good idea to
plant a part of the hedge on a bank thrown up from digging a ditch next
to it, there is a great increase in species benefiting by this. Also I
find that most people don't underplant the hedge, it is important for
wildlife to have the three layers, ground shrub and canopy. Another
thing I would include is small animal retreats, log piles etc, anything
to hide under or in.

There's a web site, I can't recall the name, which allows you to put in
a postcode and you get a list of native plants for that area.

Janet,

I think you are referring to "The Postcode Plants Database" at

the org is called 'flora for fauna' just do a search for this and if you get
