I read somewhere that putting wire meshing just under the surface of the
soil can help.

This may sound a bit thick but how do the squirrels know where you've
planted the bulbs? Do they spot the newly disturbed earth? can they smell
them? or do they notice me planting them?
I can never catch them at it either and I'm becoming obsessed that the
little blighters are stalking me. We have masses of them that leap about
like acrobats in my maple tree every morning...very cute but becoming less
so as they feast on my bulbs!

I had said that I was convinced that grey squirrels hybernated in the
winter,
I'm begining to wonder whether that is the case, I, nor my neighbours have
seen any but there is some evidence that they have been feeding, unless
some other animal has discovered the squirrels hoard of walnuts!

AIUI they don't truly hibernate - they sleep during the coldest periods,
but get up and forage for food on any warm days

That had been my understanding of the situation, prior to Alan's previous
posts. Perhaps he has Secret Squirrels (that dates me!) after all?
