Default [IBC] Don't get lost in the spam, was [IBC] Hi

Folks

This header gives me a good opportunity to remind or inform you

that most
of us are probably using spam filters of one sort or another. I

review all
my message subjects, both those in the spam file and those that

get
through. I review the spam list because there is usually one

message a day
that is errantly trapped there.

We all appreciate getting _real_ messages, so do your part to

see that your
email gets through. Here are some tips, I am sure you will have

others to add:

And don't put "spam" in the subject line. For me, at least, that
sends the message to the "Questionable" folder. ;-)

But Brent's suggestions are all good.

HOWEVER, do you get as angry about the junk mail that comes into
your regular (postal) mailbox every day? THESE actually cost you
money. Spam is just annoying. The junk mail you get every day
is the reason the Postal Service keeps asking for postal rate
increases. THEY are required to deliver it. Delivery costs
money. You need to point some of your anti-spam angst to the
Postal Service and get them to raise the rates for postal spam,
and NOT for the birthday cards and letters that we send.

So what can you do? Well I open almost everything. If I get a postage
paid envelope I simply tear the junk up, place it in the envelope and drop
it in the mailbox. When they see they have paid twice for the junk mail
sent to me I seldom find another item from them in my mailbox. YMMV

Careful about that, Jim! You'll wind up getting your bonsai
magazines priced out of
existence with killer postal rate hikes! We're caught between

a rock and a hard
place already.

Default [IBC] Don't get lost in the spam, was [IBC] Hi

hello folks

was listening to a tv news programme the other day and apparently it's only
about 180 people who are responsible for generating the worldwide spam
problem and tougher penalties are in the offing for these loathsome
individuals. i'm currently trying to reduce the heap of spam descending upon
me by opening their mail and typing my email address into the 'remove'
thingy on their website. i mean they've already got my email address so why
not try to stop further emails by attempting to remove myself. funny thing
is this is actually working and i'm getting much less spam, though of course
a number of these people have fictitious addresses that you can't reply to.
give it a try.....

Put a meaningful line in the subject, something that is unambiguous. For
those writing me, a botanical name is great. I haven't got ANY spam yet
with latin in it.

Don't leave the subject blank, this is a spam trick to make the curious
open it.

Never use Hi, Hello, or something similar in the subject as this is the
usual come on for porno spam.

Don't type the subject in caps, spammers love to yell.

Don't put anything in the subject that might have a sexual connotation.

When choosing an email user name, don't use a person's name. Many spammers
glean the name from the address and then use it to make you think you are
getting personal mail. I instantly know I have spam when the subject is
"Hey Bonsai".

When reviewing subjects look for random letters or numbers following the
subject line, such as "Forlorn? vn2" This is a spammers trick to fool the
filters by changing the subject slightly.
---------------

It's pretty incredible that something as universally hated and non
productive as spam is continually allowed to florish, while all manner of
innane subjects will rise right to top of a politicians attention.

I know this isn't bonsai, but I want to make sure we can all stay in
contact with each other because the problem is increasing almost
exponentially. My spam has increased about 50% in just the last few months,
some days almost 100 spam messages.

First, many of these spams are derived by name generators @ domain.com.
In otherwords it generates a name and the spammer adds a domain, like
Hotmail, etc. so in effect "they" don't have your address, until YOU
validate
it by respnding in some manner to the spam.

Want to really fight spam goto: http://www.samspade.org/ or other spam
fighting site and read and learn. Sam Spade has some free software to aid
in finding the originator of most spam you might get. There also are
several
newsgroups that fight spam and offer help and information.

I had a loan company that didn't get the message even after I returned
their junk mail several times.
Next I cut 4 pieces of sheet metal, different gauges each, and enclosed
a letter to the effects that ;
1. I was now selling sheet metal.
2. Quantity limited.
3. If they wanted prices, send another self addressed, stamped envelope.
4. If they wanted larger samples, send larger self addressed, stamped
envelope.

It cost them over $3.00 to get that letter. Never received any more
junk mail from them.

Actually CB, there is TONS of software on the market that is smart enough to
strip email addresses from news groups such as this one
It's a simple trick .... software downloads every message it can from the
newsgroups archives, then searches each and every post looking for the @
sign.

It searches forwards and backwards from the @ sign until it runs into a
blank on both ends. Obviously, everything before and after the @ sign is an
email address !!

If you'd like a suggestion, NEVER post your real addy in any news group.
For example, rather than posting my real address, I post
MarkHillatPAOnline.com
Anyone wishing to send me a note simply replaces "at" with @.
The program skips right over this assuming it's simple text.

AND ..... Never respond to a "remove" prompt.
If you do, they've got you !!!

BUT, as has often been said here and elsewhere, by replying to the
spammer you have just confirmed that you are a real live email address
that they can add to their database in the knowledge that this one
actually works! These known working databases are far more valuable that
an out of date list or an auto-generated list.

I'd rather filter and delete while the law catches up.
