One of the problems at the big box stores (and even, sometimes, at
nurseries) is that people remove tags to read them and don't replace them in
the same plant. In a nursery the grower *may* be able to correct the
problem, but in a big box the employees don't have the knowledge and no one
even tries.

Would Wal mart, Lowes and Home Depot be a trusted source????

I have / am learning to check the label and research the internet to see
if other users pictures match to my labels and blooms. There have been a
few interesting label switches at Home Depot and Lowes. One this weekend
was fairly obviously a Baldan's Kaleidoscope Golden Treasure ( based on my
own previous purchase, research and the 4 other ones around it) but it
had a tag of P. Sogo Pride on it. The tag was deep in the pot and was
stuck to the dirt as if it had been there for a while.

I see simialr mix ups at these stores all the time when they even have
tags.

Bruce,

Don't count on being able to positively identify a hybrid from it's
appearance. In this yellow oncidium case, it's next to impossible, even
with the size thrown in. There are Sweet Sugar cultivars with huge lips
and some with smaller lips. Likewise, there are Gower Ramsays of all
sizes, as well. Then there are other hybrids - some using one of them as
a parent - that muddy the water completely.

The simple fact is that unless the plant is labeled and you trust the
source, you will never be absolutely certain.

The Yellow one is an Oncidium hybrid. It could be Sweet Sugar or Gower
Ramsay. Without seeing the size of the flower I can't tell which it
is.
Sweet Sugar is a larger flower than Gower Ramsay.

Yes, the lesson learned is to buy from reliable sources, i.e., not the
big box stores. When I first started buying orchids, I bought plants
from Home Depot. I was surprised when they didn't live. Later, I found
out that their delivery trucks, handling, and display procedures were
not geared to New England fall and winter temperatures. Basically, the
roots froze before the plants got to the store, and if they didn't, the
HD employees killed them by overwatering. Now, I'd never buy a plant
from HD unless it was in April, May, September, or early October--and I
up-ended the pot to look at the roots. And I'd never count on the tag
being correct unless I was on-site when the plants were being unpacked.
There truly is no substitute for a professionally grown plant.

NOPE! I've reached the point where Rob's rule no longer is true.

Last spring I took Vandas, Schombos, Cymbos, and a couple large Dendrobiums
out to summer in the yard. I had lots of space in the greenhouse in May.
Now it's September and after visits to Al's, a few Florida trips, a visit to
growers in Houston, a visit to H&R, and mailorder from OakHill...ok 3 mail
orders I filled the void. In three weeks I have to bring everything but the
Cymbos back under glass.

I've been through the collection twice now to throw away anything that
looked sick or not worth trying to nurse back to health. I sold a few
duplicates at the society meeting. I gave a couple to friends who would
appreciate special clones. In two weeks I'm taking a bunch of stuff to the
orchid show for the member's sales table.

Right now there is no room for just one more

Going through orchid shopping withdrawal,
Gene

Plus for kittens, orchids are like potato chips... they can't eat just one...
(Hasn't happened yet... but one of Liz's Phals is starting to take a beating
from the kitten).

I have one HD that puts the orcids in decorative ceramic pots (with no drain
holes) and then they sit in stagnant water. The other just throws them on
the table and they fall over, coming out of the far too small grower pots
Another one never waters their indoor "exotics"
Luckily I have always gotten mine shortly after arrival.
Surpsingly, Tom Thumb ( A local grocery Chain) usually has the best orchids
as far as tagging, and health. They just never have much variety.

Nope!

Its only called 'Rob's Rule' But really its a law. Sort of like
gravity and thermal dynamics. You may be able to escape the pull of

You know it got to 46 degrees here last night.

Robs rules schmobs rules. Oft quoted never ignored.

There are places in the universe where things space, time and credit limits
have no meaning; places like black holes and greenhouses. Now, you have a
greenhouse so you already know what it's like to live on the weird side of
the event horizon, so just give it up. You are not fooling anybody. You
can't go 4 weeks from today without picking up another plant, I'm sure of
it.
