Default OS Meeting Ideas

All,

I'm going into my second year as veep of our local OS, and I'm in charge of
doing an orchid clinic, which I do myself, and also scheduling speakers. The
speakers are the simple part, since we have many wonderful growers in the
area. Anyone have unique ideas for society meetings? I found a couple of
Kathy's, and I'm definitely going to try them. Repotting, semi-hydro,
mounting, etc, are all pretty much worn thin.

And to get the ball rolling, I'll share a format that I occasionally use,
with great success. I break the attendees into smaller groups (one time I
handed out cards with pictures of 4 different orchids and the attendees had
to find the members of their group without talking - funny), and put someone
experienced in charge of each, doing whatever demonstration I've planned.

All input greatly appreciated!

Another thing I'm doing is having the PR person from our water department
come talk about water quality. Of course he ain't a John G. Talpa...

That's a good idea; we had such a meeting and we all took samples in of
our water with and without fertilizer added and had them tested.

Another idea:

Have those who know do a hands-on of how to set up an exhibit, so that
when your society has a show there will be more knowledgeable folks to help.

We did a sort of "wide games" with these demos. We had 5.
Display, Bugs & Chemicals, Mounts, Repot, Wildcatt. The small
groups were to visit each workshop. The problem is repeating the
errors of the demonstrator. The good is that you could have
several people working on preparing ways to do things so you get
a few more tricks. One person has an opinion, 2 or more have a
handful to tried and true tricks and several ways to do the same
thing. People could bring in questionable names or unknown
hybrids to find out what Wildcatt has to say about the parents of
their plants. We need to do more with how plants are labeled for
displays and judging.

At the spring show a display was all set up; when a friend
completely reorganized it. Her style was more effective. After
that we talked about doing a couple is displays, showing
everyone. Then having another group do it their way. See if they
can improve on each other. I think this would be easier if
someone took it apart in between, at least to some extent. It
would also demonstrate that everyone can put a display together
and that they do not have to be difficult. We often get in
trouble with too many props. But you don't see it until
afterward.

Those are great ideas; thanks! Every couple of years we have a table top
display demo. Putting up a full display takes too long for a meeting, but
maybe an outline would help.

Whatever I do needs to be humorous, in any event, because that's my style
and that's what seems to keep the group sharp and involved. Some months
back, when I wasn't getting enough people donating plants for a big display,
Frank made me a graphic of a cartoon cat beggar, with an orchid in it. I
pasted it on a big piece of oak tag on which I wrote "Will work for display
plants!". At the beginning of the clinic, I slapped a plastic pot on my
head and sashayed around the room with the sign. Got lots of laughs, and
some new volunteers, too.

Our shows are usually table top displays. Even with three or
four societies displaying will only have 2 or 3 that go to the
floor. A real test is the display with 5 or fewer plants. For
one thing it proves that everyone in the group can put a display
together and it is easier to carry. I almost took show theme
with one and we had one display that took theme with only one
Phal. Think outside the box.

I once visited the Arizona Orchid Society and found their informalities very
refreshing. It has been sometime now; however, I vaguely recall that each
member brought in a blooming plant or more and then discussed various aspects of
the plant's culture, etc. A great deal was learned by all.

We do that as introduce your plants on the show and tell table.
Or not if you don't want to stand up. We found a member who had
her "grow room" in the crawl space of her house.

We had Greg in Denver - a very well attended meeting. He
explained thru photo samples. Not too technical, but enough for
the photo knowledgeable to say 'AH, yes!.' He will talk cameras
after the presentation if someone asks. But he aims to tell you
how to improve your photo, no mater what camera you use.

It is all on his web site, but very hard to visualize from the
small photos.

Just a thought, what about a mock student judging class session.
Have some members bring in plants & have a resident judge tell all!
It could be staggered over several meetings as there is probably a
ton of info.
Cheers Wendy (Who has only been to one society meeting in her life)!
