Had one cruise my pond a few weeks ago, hasn't been back. Don't know
much about their migratory habits in So Cal area. Do they hang out all
year?

I'm in zone 6 which can have some serious cold snaps. We only see herons in
the warmer weather.

Great Blue Herons are year round residents in
Southern California.
They are in our area too, SE WA state.

I've got plastic netting over the pond now. Have heard that they have a
good memory, and that I can expect him/her again at any time.
Weather's always relatively nice here, so I guess we keep vigilant!

Kingfishers, too. When it's real stormy out to sea, you'll see a lot of
seagulls and an occasional pelican. I've only seen one pelican. I think he
followed the gulls. You don't want a pelican to find your pond. He'll take
all the fish at one swallow! Nice golf course, BTW.

Speaking of herons, one is sure to appear - and it did. I just saw a GB one
standing next to my netted 720g tanks behind the house.

We have wetlands nearby with Blue Herons. That's almost a given as to
where my visitor came from.

Drove in from work yesterday afternoon and had a GBH standing by my pond.
It's covered with netting right now to catch the leaves so it can't get in
and go fishing. I've seen it back in the area twice since. sigh I'm afraid
there's going to be some run ins down the line. I dug my pond with no plant
ledges to keep the raccoons at bay but the GBH is another story. That thing
looked to be 5 foot tall standing in the yard!

And given the chance they'll clean every single fish out of your pond. I'm
think it may not have been the raccoon that got all the GF in the one
unnetted pond we have. It may have been this GBH.

About the size of the one that visited me. Turns out it only got a few
of my fish. Experience traumatized the others for weeks. They are only
now starting to come out.
