In certain incidences it can be disastrous. GF are always sexually on,
whereas koi are twice a year at most. GF males aren't always understanding
and will still harass the female koi even when she has no eggs to give.
IME, it is comet GF, not the fancier varieties that are the biggest
problem. ~ jan

=========================
I've not had this experience Jan. My male goldfish ignored the female koi.
Once the water warms in early summer the male GF are no longer interested in
the females. The GF bred in spring mainly whereas the koi spaw several
times over the spring and summer. Maybe the location makes a difference.

they breed and produce crap hybrids. in addition, it complicates treatment of
disease in the pond. Ingrid

Can you explain in more detail, why? I have seen lots of ponds with koi
and GF. They are not breeding for sale, just for the pleasure of seeing
different types of fish.

The point was that they ship, and do it well.

I could be mistaken. After the comets killed a female koi, that wasn't even
old enough to breed, I removed them all. I did have a large shubunkin in
the pond for years and never had trouble with it.

Carol, I'm surprised you mix your koi & GF since you were selling the
babies as koi. Perhaps I misunderstand, since that is what we were talking
about?

I guess I'll be learning more now that I have a designated GF only pond, as
I was under the impression GF would breed all season long. ~ jan

I haven't had GF with the koi in several years. The GF I have are all
behind the house in 720g above ground tanks. I never sold baby GF or hybrids
as koi fry. It's easy to tell the difference between koi and GF fry, even at
an early age.

Perhaps I misunderstand, since that is what we were talking
about?

I don't recall a thread about selling baby GF as being koi?!?! I do see a
thread about GF harassing female koi and added that I did not have that
problem in my ponds. When my GF were in the ponds with the koi they both
spawned with their own kind. I saw no cross-breeding.

Mine didn't. Once the water became warm all GF breeding ceased. The koi
bred on into the summer.

Well then, wouldn't you say you don't have a problem because you don't have
GF & koi together? That's what where this thread kind of headed, with a
question about mixing fish. Nothing about selling hybrids.

Interesting and very unusual, imho.

My brief experience with GF was that they would breed with any female put
in the pond that was gravid... or even appeared to be gravid (full of
eggs). I'll be watching my GF pond, but I suspected once the females are
spawned that will be that, but if I were to put a new fish in, the males
would chase it if it appeared to be full of eggs. I have noticed lots of
nudging thru the summer with them, and when they've been brought in to the
tanks in the winter.

My koi, otoh, are spring only, if that. JME, YMMV, ~ jan

At one time they were together as you must surely remember.

I see.

Perhaps but that's what we observed.

Yes, interesting indeed. Should I assume they all have my pond conditions
and live in my geographical area?
