This wont be lined pond will it? How do you plan to make it watertight? I
may have missed an earlier post by you, but is this to be filtered and for
fish and plants both, or a more natural pond?

I bought the liner last fall. This pond replaces a above ground swimming
pool that I have been using for the last few years. The filters are up by
my house. 10 or so. Most visitors consider them to be additional
ponds/creeks/waterfalls. There are also some additional conventional
filters in large poly tanks beside my house. These filters are well
established and been in use for years. The new pond is down hill and holds
the pump. The pump sends the water up the hill to the filters which returns
by gravity to the pond. I gave away my lilies when I removed the swimming
pool. I will probably get more. I have 10 albino channel cats 2 feet long
and assorted Koi and goldfish. All happy in a filter by the house until the
new pond is ready. This pond will be more formal with a knee high wall
surrounding it. You can see the pallets of block sitting in the back of the
last picture.

Pat, this is way exciting and I too look forward to progressing pictures.

I'd like to mention a couple of things to consider. Bottom Drains & Vortex
Filters for this size pond. My sister finished her ~ 10,000 gallon pond
system last year. Prior to that she had only done water gardens using
in-pond pumps. Upon moving to a warmer climate she started questioning me
about filtration. She did what I suggested, a bottom drain in each pond (3
pond system connected) and vortex filters at the end with out-of-pond pump.
I have been thanked over & over again for my recommendations... even her
husband, an engineer and manager of a electricity producing plant, who
built the pond system, was conferring with me.

So, look into vortex, put money into infra structure and the maintenance
will be minimal (none of us are getting any younger). )

I know if we ever do a re-do or additional, I'll be going w/vortex. ~ jan

I think I have something in mind like your vortex filters except I call them
settling basins. I was going to use plastic barrels. The problem I see
with vortex filters is the price. $400 each. I had to clean my pump weekly
in the old pond. I want to catch the debris before the pump this time. If
I taper the bottom of the barrel with some concrete I think it would work
the same as an expensive vortex filter.

What's the diameter of your barrels? Hmmm, not sure, but I don't think my
sister paid that much/barrel. Would you like me to check with her? ~ jan

I know I have 22" diameter barrels, and to get the proper vortex (not too
fast) I would have had to use a pump that only went about 500 gph, which
would not have given enough suction to pull much in. You can go to my
website and see what we did do, but it is only on a 1500 & 2000 gallon
pond. With a 10,000, imo, you'd need 4 units and the maintenance on such
becomes a whole different animal at that time, almost every weekend you'd
have to be cleaning one pre-filter. Now if you're coning the bottoms to a
drain, that does make maintenance much, MUCH easier, wish we'd done that...
Still with a vortex, you go out and turn a valve or pull up on a gate
valve, and the muck drains away for several minutes then you're done...
unless you want to rinse down any media within the tank.

I'll let you know when I hear from my sister. I know she really shopped
around for her set up, getting pieces here and there, if I remember
correctly. She uses a 3 barrel unit, and I think they were the medium size
of the vortex. ~ jan
