Default Large Preformed Ponds

Hi.

We've recently moved into a new house, which has a pond in the front
garden, complete with installed pump/filter. It looks like it's been
done with standard pond liner and has at some stage been damaged and
now leaks. We're relatively inexperienced when it comes to ponds, but
would like to get the pond replaced with a large preformed pond liner.

I've had a little browse around the internet but have struggled to
find one large enough. The space we have is around 350cm by 300cm, and
about 100cm deep (at deepest part).

I'd be grateful if someone could advise where we could get something
around this size. Also...are there any other major points we need to
consider?

Many thanks in advance of any help!

Regards,

Tim.

preformed are VERY hard to get right (much harder than a "flexible") and
mine was only a 50 gallon....

and they do get fragile with age.. (they are fragile anyway!!!)

IMHO you would be far better buying a butyl (or firestone) liner and (after
checking for whatever caused the leak in the old one and rectifying) laying
it over the original pond (make sure you buy one big enough)..

(of course you will need to pump out the old water, store the fish for a
few days etc.. but IMHO it will be worth doing!)

Default Large Preformed Ponds

Hi Tim,
As a person that has had a large preformed pond and now has a flexible liner
pond, I can tell you that you would be better off going with a flexible liner.
You didn't say where you live, but if you live any where there is cold weather
and freezing temps, the ground can heave as it freezes and push the preformed
liner so that it is not level anymore. We had a 270 gallon preformed pond.
And believe me, my hubby had it as level as it could get. This spring we
noticed that it had really sunk on one side. We live in Idaho, and have snow
and freezing temps most of the winter. This happened within a 2 year period.
My hubby figured it was sinking some each year but we just didn't notice it
until this spring. Hope this helps you.

The first pond I made back in about 89 or 90 was a flexible pvc
liner. It lasted about 5 years and became very brittle,, I dropped a
rock in and it broke thru the liner. The pond was at my parents house
and rather then replacing it they just wanted it filled in. I had a
hard time doing it because it brought so much enjoyment but I did it.
Now, this past june I installed a pond at my home and I used a
preformed liner, it's 150 gallons with textured sides. One would think
that a preformed would be easier to install but as mentioned they are
a bear to keep level. Mine was out maybe 1" on one end so I drained it
and backfilled the low end. Now the low end is the high end. My plan
is when/if this liner goes bad to replace with the rubber firestone
liner( and go bigger of course). It's stronger, allows more freedom
with shape, easier to hide the edge. It may outwardly seem to be more
work with a flexible liner but in the long run I can see it's definate
advantages over preformed.

Good luck,
Shanda

Default Large Preformed Ponds

I live in Northampton (UK), so we don't get very harsh weather often -
just the usual: rain one minute, bright and sunny the next!!

It's actually my folks who've asked me to do a bit of research, so
thanks very much for the quick responses. I'll pass on the
recommendations of getting a strong flexible pond liner, and laying it
over the top of the old one, rather than getting a preformed one.
Thanks a lot!

If anyone's got any further advice or recommendations, please keep 'em
coming!!

Tim,

My main pond, Shareholders Pond, is about 3000 gallons in total. I used 45
mil EPDM. It was heavy but my wife and I spread it easily ourselves. We just
started our second pond, which is a preform. It is a pain in the arse.
