Default to empty the pond or not??

Hi,

I have a green (algae) pond and I'm just about to put a UV & filter on it.
Is it better to drain it and fill it with fresh clear water before starting
the filter/uv or just let the equipment get to work on it as it stands (no
fish curerently).

Ta , Sky

Don't empty it if the water is just green.
The green is suspended single cell algae.
Great amounts of fresh water will provide
additional nutrients for algae.

If the water has string algae, floating bits of gooey
algae, then your pond is probably overloaded with
nutrients, then you should clean out the stuff that
is feeding the algae.

Turn on the UV.
Do you have a mechanical filter?

The algae is going to die and the remains of the algae
cells will need to be removed. Sending your water
thru a mechanical filter will remove them from the
water.

And I'd like to add, anytime someone thinks they need to completely change
the water, it is far, far better to do small frequent water changes every
2nd or 3rd day for a number of times. You many have run off or other stuff
that just needs to be diluted. Small frequent water changes will not affect
the main balance, especially if there is a day or two between them, but can
correct whatever is causing the problem quite often. ~ jan
