Hi all
Having started cutting back a load of wildly overgrown trees, bushes,
hedges, pretty much everything that the previous owners don't seem to
have pruned at all, I find that I'm getting unfeasibly large piles of
waste. Seems that a shredder and a compost heap or two might be in
order.

Previous discussion here seems to have leaned in favour of Bosch or
Ryobi shredders, which seem to be similarly priced. Both brands seem
to make regular models and quiet models. The Bosch quiet model has a
screw type blade, and both quiet models have reverse, where as the
regular models don't appear to.

So, if you'd be so kind, in the experience of the group: Bosch or
Ryobi, quiet or not?

Definitely one of the quiet types not so much for the noise reduction its
just a better method of shredding they use. as to which manufacture, don't
know I am still very happy with our Bosch 2200 but have never seen one of
the others.

Agreed. I have a few niggles about the Bosch 2200, but it has started
to look well-used in a mere 3 months! From the specifications, the
Bosch 2200 uses a slightly different and slightly superior method to
the Bosch 1600 and 2000.

While you can compost twigs directly (and I did until this winter),
that DOES need a lot more time and space.

Alko.

Get a 'quiet' type. If you get a bladed one you'll regret it. They're
horribly noisy and bung up all the time, ime.

My Alko 'Silent Power' model is several years old and still going
strong. They seem very robustly made.

Just a point of information, Be carefull, the birds round here are
starting to look for nesting sites, and remember it is against the law
to destroy a birds nest, even if they are only starting to build.
So Cut with care.
My chiper is petrol driven and capacity was my deciding factor.

No experience of the Ryobi, however I have had a "quiet" Bosch for
almost 5 years now, it has done sterling work (I have a 1/2 acre garden)
and is still going strong. If I had to get rid of all my machinery
except one it is the shredder I'd keep. ;-)

Thanks all. Opinion seems to firmly favour a quiet shredder, rating
"cog type" crush and cut models higher than screw type. Which means a
Bosch 2200HP, a Ryobi RSH2455 or a high end ALKO.

Price wise, the cheapest I've been able to find is the Ryobi - so
that's what I'll get, if ebay is kind to me ;-)
