Want to get rid of walnut tree?
My walnut tree is becoming a bit of a bind, it's really much too big for the garden, and as much as I love walnuts I feel the time has come to dispose of it! The question is, who is likely to want to buy it for use as walnut timber? Alan in Windsor |

(Look in yellow pages, or your local community newspaper) When I was on the local council I was involved with reclaiming some land and turning it back into a community football ground. There were a load of Holmoaks with preservation orders on them which had to be trimmed. This we were able to do and I contacted the local woodturning group and they pounced :-)) Your local Antiques dealer might also be interested. A friend of mine who is a well know Antiques dealer has his own joinery repair shop and wants that sort of timber, no doubt you have someone near you? Yellow pages again. I feel you are sitting on a little goldmine. My Walnut tree was demolished after the sale of the land to a builder who put a couple of blocks of flats on the land. Wonder if he knew ;-) ;-)???? Here's a useful link; click on the branch link to find a club near you. http://www.woodturners.co.uk/index.htm However, it might be better to contact one of the professionals on the committee to find a pro near you and get a proper feller in. A bunch of amateurs in the garden can leave one helluva mess. BTW Expect (or demand) at least a salad bowl as just reward! Graham |

We had professionals in because it was Council work and yes I wouldn't let a bunch of 'cowboys' in either. But try to get the tree fellers to work in conjunction with the Turners or Antique dealer because of getting the best cuts. Mike -- The Royal Naval Electrical Branch Association. Mike Furniture makers/restorers will often avoid backyard trees because they often have nails in them. A friend of mine in Suffolk has a wood yard for a furniture company and they always go over a tree trunk with a metal detector before cutting. You'd be surprised at what they find. A tree from near a WW2 airfield had a complete ceramic insulator block inside. You can imagine what that would do to a saw! Graham |

Graham Another site I visit for photography, had a tree with just a little bit of a house brick showing. The caption was 'Brick eating tree' I posted a picture I took of a tree which had had a wire hawser passed round it to support a fence. In time the tree had 'eaten' the hawser. I can post the picture somewhere A) if anyone is interested and B) you tell me where :-) Mike -- The Royal Naval Electrical Branch Association. When he finally manage to stop it (3 huge bruises later) the augur had tangled with a barbed-wire fence, buried when the land was prepared for housing. Graham |

There is almost certainly a local sawmill that will come and fell it, take it away, and may give you money for it too. Do try and sell it standing, though, as the techniques for felling timber are not the same for logging as they are for clearance. |

Am I likely to find them in the phone book? |
