Hedge cutting on the cheap !
I live on a very narrow lane on the edge of a village. The newish owner of
quite a large bungalow (with large garden) a bit further down the lane has approx. 50 yards of awful 12ft high Leylandi hedge. He had it trimmed last friday (long overdue). The trimmings - lots of it - have just been left lying in the lane covering half of it. Still there today. Never seen anything like this before. Or am I just getting old and having a moan about nothing ? -- Regards, Hugh Jampton |

Some itinerants called, and told him that he had to let them trim several large trees because the chap next door had complained, which was completely untrue. To say the result was butchery would be an understatement. They didn't remove any material, and charged him £400 for the job. Chris -- Chris J Dixon Nottingham UK Have dancing shoes, will ceilidh. |

If you don't want to approach the owners then call the local Council Road Sweeping Dept and tell them it's a dangerous situation for any motorcyclist, someone has dropped a load of leaves that are now wet and covering the road, in my experience they will be round in a matter of hours. Nasty - but in this day and age - normal I guess :-( Not applicable in the case I've mentioned though. The new owners of the bungalow are not very nice and certainly would not employ anyone to do anything. They run a business from their house - bathroom fitting (council estates) for the local council. They bring all the old baths etc. and burn them in their garden. Young lad (employee) - loud music all day long - bonfire - toxic smells all day long. Luckily I live some way away. Don't know how closer neighbours manage. Nice doctor lived there before - kept the lovely garden nice ..... please come back :-) And *yes* I have contacted our local council - they don't want to know :-( -- Regards, Hugh Jampton |

Contact your county council and specifically the waste management director. Don't phone, write. They have to log it in and action it then. Several offences are being committed here. The bathroom fittings etc are controlled waste and subject to duty of care restrictions. They are certainly not allowed to burn those baths. Specifically ask for an inspection of the site. Health and Safety will also want to know, both about the burning of controlled waste and the road hazard. Environmental health will also be interested in the noise pollution, councils have an officer dedicated to noise issues. Steve |

They do not want to be sued. Worth a call anyway, so if anyone you know does have an accident because of the leaves they can sue the Council which may make them wake up in future. -- Regards Bob Hobden 17mls W. of London.UK |

Hedge cutting on the cheap !
Thanks to all of you for your helpful suggestions :-)
Update :- I walked along the lane today and to my surprise the bulk of the trimmings have been removed. Not a very good job done - still messy but not a danger anymore :-) It was there for 3 days - I'm still amazed that anyone would leave a mess like that on a road for so long - I won't even do that *inside* my garden. As for our council - they really are bad. Bottom of the league table until last year when they moved up a couple of places - still rated as poor though. I think some of you must have good performing councils and perhaps don't realise have bad the bad ones can be. I've contacted my council's environment health dept. on several occasions and never got anywhere. On one occasion I was so upset that they didn't want to know I contacted the police - they also didn't want to know. I then contacted my MP - she *did* want to know and got in touch with the council and followed up my case for quite a long time. She also got nowhere with them but did apologise to me and left me in no doubt that she felt the same way as me about the council. I think I'd better stop moaning :-) Thanks again folks. -- Regards, Hugh Jampton |

It's the only way to get results sometimes. I'm sorry you've got such uninterested people on the council but remember - they're elected. Stand against them yourself or at least raise public awareness. Stand against them yourself or at least raise public awareness. Only Councillors are elected and they have little to do with the everyday things Councils are supposed to do. The Council workers are employed to do a job and if they don't do it complain to their boss the Head of the Council and your Ward Councillor (who can kick arse) and continue upwards until someone does something about the situation. Names and contact details of all concerned should be on your Councils Web Site. -- Regards Bob Hobden |
