OT WW1 War Records
You may or may not know I'm well into Family History and thought some others
may have had relatives in or killed during the First World War. Ancestry.com are allowing free access to the War Records at this time so you can look them up. http://landing.ancestry.co.uk/intl/uk/worldwar1.aspx Regards Bob Hobden |

I don't know specifically as I haven't needed to research them but there are some sites which may help... http://www.firstaif.info/ http://www.rslwahq.org.au/history.html http://www.nzhistory.net.nz/war/anzac-day/introduction My first problem with WW1 is my Grandfather had his foot blown off and was picked up and mended by the Germans, he of course then became a POW. After he was repatriated his new metal foot with working ankle followed from Germany. And there are no records about it in the UK. My second problem is my wife's Grandfather disappeared between 1911 and 1916 when his wife remarried and legend says he was last seen marching over Waterloo Bridge but there are no records about him at all, no deaths, no army records. -- Regards Bob Hobden |

I'd love to find out more about where his division went. I found my grandfather and his brother on the site, but other than that they both fought in France and survived the war their wasn't much useful information. The record of my grandfather is incomplete. It's odd that the records don't include a soldier's date of birth. I know what you mean, but you can get some information like army numbers, regiment, etc from the Medals Rolls which will be a great help in taking your research forward either at the National Archives at Kew or at the respective Regiments archive. For Officers you can actually get to view their Army file at Kew (not that any of our lot were officers). Mind you about 70% was lost in WW2 so you have to be lucky. -- Regards Bob Hobden |

Unfortunately in WW1 a lot of bodies didn't get found/identified/buried. My wife's Grandfather may well be one of those. -- Regards Bob Hobden |

We went there and saw the inscription and because of the information, were able to research what actually happened to him. Almost to what he had for breakfast the morning he was killed!! Anyone doing research has a wonderful friend these days ......... Google. I do Military History themed illustrated talks, did one last Tuesday and doing another on a different theme next Monday and the information and photos I have received via Google ......... well. Superb. Transfer the information and pictures to the computer, use the PowerPoint programme and a Projector and there you have it. :-)) Mike |

But then we don't know if that was him or not, there are 4 possibilities there anyway, five if you include he simply disappeared. The National Archives at Kew are no help either, been there a few times without success. -- Regards Bob Hobden |

The record of my grandfather is incomplete. It's odd that the records don't include a soldier's date of birth. Mine both lied so it wouldn't help much! I know my gradfather's brother was 16 when he volunteered. I was interested to see what the official version of his age was. I was not able to narrow the 6000 on offer enough to know which was my granddad. So many Pridhams! There was only one ambiguity in my case and one of the alternatives died in 1916 so I knew which was the correct one. But thanks for the link Bob, I am interested but like Sally not enough to pay the sub! me too LOL Our county library has negotiated access to a bunch of online services for library members, including Ancestry. Lots are available from home via the library website, though I think ancestry is one of the ones you have to go to the library to access from their computers. My wife has used Ancestry investigating the family tree, she has picked up some useful info from other people she didn't know but researching related people from a different direction as it were. -- Chris French |

Easy to use and the more you use it the more it does. http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp I bought a program some years ago but prefer this free one. Also, whilst at first glance findmypast.com is cheaper than ancestry.co.uk I haven't found that in practice. I have almost exclusively used ancestry. You are going to have to get duplicate Birth and Marriage certs at £7 each anyway to prove you have the correct persons (until you get back past 1837) and the wife's maiden name etc. -- Regards Bob Hobden |

I might be worth your while asking this question in the newsgroup soc.genealogy.australia+nz It's more likely to have people there who have more of an interest in researching ANZACS than in a UK gardening group. |
