Try Googling on woodruff, both images and web. I can't say I associate it
with a garlic smell but you may have wild garlic in there, too.

Be very careful what you wish for, once you have it, you can never get
rid of it, it spreads everywhere. If you could take all mine away I
would love you forever! Incidently there seems to be a larger and
smaller version. The larger is not too bad, the smaller is really
pernicious.

There is something in my neighbours front garden that has flowers similar to
Ransoms but the leaves are very narrow, it grows from small white bulbs.
Unfortunately the old Head Gardener that planted them passed away but I
wonder about "Star of Bethlehem". Must admit they seem to be taking over so
are invasive too.

Hi Sacha

Nope, its not woodruff. The leaves are sword shaped like daffs or
snowdrops.

I've Googled for pics and I'm not sure it is wild garlic. I saw biggish
plants with wide flat leaves and white star flowers.
The plant is more like snowdrop size, with a white snowdrop size flower
and has a very strong garlic smell. It is growing like a carpet in an
adjacent wooded area.

Is it this:
http://www.dgsgardening.btinternet.c...rneredleek.htm

I don't think it is that as it doesn't have as many flower heads per
stem.

Try searching through this list on Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Allium_species

Hi Mel
Still no success :-(
I did look, honest! Most on that list don't have a web page, of the ones
that are detailed, not all have a photo.
Thanks anyway

Any idea what the smaller one is called as it seems that's the one I've got?

Dig it up and send it to Marc Wilson?

Alternatively, anyone got any recipes that use wild garlic?

Leaves good in salads, bulbs excellent in casseroles, roast meat,
pickles, etc.

Why the cross posting?
Yes, Reepham in Norfolk

'ere, it's the gardening types.

Mornin', Gardeners. That reminds me, must have a look at what we're meant
to do with the "challenge" blue poppy seeds. "Challenge", 'cos of the
instructions for growing them... you're supposed to plant them at the winter
solstice with a black cat in your left hand at midnight or something. Then
you refuse to let them flower the first year by removing any flower buds...

summat like that, anyway.

Try Leucojum, though again I don't think that's garlicky.

If you haven't got anywhere, I'll put it up for you.

I could well take you up on that, though I ought to learn how to for myself.
Camera will be out Friday as the weather man said it will be sunny.

It's sunny today - I can see blue skies all the way to Reepham and beyond.

If you want to put pics up the easiest way is to put them on Photobucket
or some similar site. The better way is to see if you have any webspace
with your account, and ask your webmaster to allocate your space, then
acquire WSFTP_LE (free File Transfer Protocol client).

An easy starter which makes proper pages is Open Office, and save as HTML.

The best way is to learn the basics of writing a web page in a text
editor, then renaming the document's file extension to .htm or .html

Well, I reckon I could summon Nige with little trouble - a troll dangled
in front of him should make rather good bait.

However, we don't want to singe the ears of our resident ladies, do we,
boys and grils?

So, on mature reflection, the eagerly anticipated odour of roast troll
has to be relegated to the realms of wishful thinking, if we are to save
our gals from shellshock.

Smelling-salts, anyone?
