I always have a problem opening Klner jars, the type with a glass lid.
Releasing the vacuum can be a PITA, the problem is one can easily chip
the lid or bottle rim. Has anyone found an easy fool proof way of
opening them?

Don't know much about Kilner jars but thinking about it
there can't be a complete vacuum in them or they would
implode,

No they wouldn't - but they'd be a small piece of turf to open.

so try immersing in warm/hot water and the small amount
of air in there would expand making the lid easier to remove.

When I bottle things in Kilner jars there is a total vacuum (well, very
nearly) - in the space at the top. Putting the jars in hot water could
break them, and if the air is excluded properly, will only serve to
warm-up the contents.

If I wanted to equalise pressures (as much as possible) I would put the
jar in an asparagus boiler and bring it up to the boil, and leave it
there long enough for the contents to reach the same temperature.

Removed and attacked immediately, there should be no problem.

Howsomedever, I've never found this necessary.

BTW, I've just come across a pile of new steel lids with attached rubber
rings. Hint - raid charity shops regularly, and remember, everything
comes to him who waits.

Or her, of course.

Further to the boiling jars to equalise pressures hint, today, for the
huge sum of £1.50 I bought (in a charidee siop) a stainless steel
saucepan - handle on either side - 8.5 inches high and 5.5 inches across
- means I can keep my (a bit taller, and with an inner basket) asparagus
pan for vegetables innit.
