Forgive this off-topic message but I believe some here have sometimes
collected news from nntp.aioe.org.

I'm thinking of moving from Demon news to nntp.aioe.org with a view to
closing down my Demon account altogether soon. Does anyone here use them
and, if so, are they reliable?

I've started collecting a few newsgroups from them (but not this one)
and so far they seem very good. I'm even getting messages that didn't
come to me via Demon! I've googled for information about aioe and the
only negative comments stem from January 2009 when their server went
down. For a free source of news they seem very good. They do have one or
two rules but for me they are not onerous.

Does anyone know differently?

I've never used them (nor heard of them to be honest). Any reason in
particular that you want to use them?

For a free news server, try one of the more popular ones:
http://www.eternal-september.org/

Or for a cheap, reliable one, http://news.individual.net/

I haven't used them, but I understand there is a restriction on the number
of posts you are allowed to send.
I use news individual net and am very pleased with them. They filter out
all the spam too!

They also react fast to complaints about spam.

And have a 24/7 helpdesk you can email and a real person responds within a
few minutes. I cannot praise them highly enough - a real bargain for 10
euros/year and an account is easy to set up.
The only downside is that they don't support binary groups.

There is spam in usenet? I don't see any spam, well maybe the odd
post every few weeks but nothing worth worrying about.

Agreed. Excellent service and very inexpensive.

+1 Guess who I use for usenet...

aioe have been around for a while as one of the known usenet
providers. Donno what they are like though.

I thank you all for your replies, although I was aware of all the points
and alternatives that you mention, having done quite some research on
the subject!

However it does seem that no-one here actually uses aioe.org which is
really what I wanted to know. I started using them a few days ago and so
far their supply of articles is excellent; as I said above, I have
received some articles which I didn't get via Highwinds. I posted the
updated Welcome message via aioe.org this morning via my automatic
posting software and it came through immediately.

I've had individual.net in mind for some time and may eventually go over
to that but, for the time being, I'll use aioe for some of my newsgroups
to test them for reliability.

So far, so good!

Well, I've had to change over to aioe.org this morning simply because I
haven't had any messages on this newsgroup from Demon/Highwinds since
midnight. I've just picked up about fifty from aioe.org that have been
posted today!

I use news.individual.net as my main news provider and aioe.org on just
a few groups, upto now I've had no problems with either news server.

That's comforting to know. Thanks.
