Lovely, I used to have Hill House's D. imperialis which was spectacular in
leaf but I never got it to flower as I grew it outside, still got to 14ft or
more in a season. I know you have the same plant but it does not grow so
tall and it flowers earlier (before the frost kills it), do any of your's
have spectacular foliage like the tall one? I ask because I'd like one.

What you want - I say with authority (!) is the Dahlia excelsa we got
from David. *It grows to about 5' or so here and needs very beefy
staking in the winds we get but it is a spectacularly beautiful flower
and is still flowering and budding now in our garden. *I am really
enamoured of this plant so I hope David still has it. *D. imperialis
grows outside with us and is a curiosity but it rarely flowers outside.
*Otoh, in the greenhouse, it will go up the double height, poke its
head out of the roof and flower then.

The D. Imperialis I have came from suttons seeds last year as part of
an offer, very good stock though they were only 6ft till they started
to throw the flower buds, since then they have put on another 2 ft.
I lost a lot of the tree dahlias I was growing last year, but I think
I saved a good selection; it's hard deciding to scrap a strain, so
last winter did that for me as I had to save the best first.
Four of my favourites are shorter, growing to only 6ft this year

Lovely pics David.
Do you save and sell seed from your plants? I'd love a mixture to
experiment with.

Just shows you how gardeners differ.........
for me, Um . like the idea of it flowering for ages and being tall but
it's a bit sort of well, like the merkii flower whereas some of David's
dahlias are really wonderful flowers.

I personally find that wishy washy well okay delicate pale pink to be
lovely on darker foliage on other types of plants but a bit lost on the
green of the dahlia foliage but of course - each to his own

Think I know someone with mutabalis though so i will try and get him a
cutting of that

I'm trying to leave lifting as long as possible.

Is that Dahlia mutabalis?
All I can find on line is this Brazilian I think

Nome botânico Dahlia pinnata
Nome popular Dália Mutabilis, Dália Mesclada
But the picture posted is not Pinata

Do let me know when you do David, I like Dahlias but lost my "Bergers
Record" (big Ferrari red cactus) which I loved and only have a small one now
which has been out in a very large pot for years, can't remember the name
and I'm not going out in the rain to check the label right now.

Solved the rpoblem Janet,
You have the wrong David
it's Dave Pool who wrote
"Dave Poole" in message
Didn't know Ray had B. madagascariensis tucked away Sacha.
He hasn't got B. forrrestii as well has he?

If he hasn't I have :~)

If that's the case, I'll have to pop down and relieve you of a piece
in exchange for folding notes at some stage. There are a few
Buddleias that I really like and forrestii is pretty high up on the
list. I could do with a Cobaea pringlei as well and (somewhat
bizarrely) Rosa Mutabilis.
