Default Daffodil

The first daffodil is in full flower. Well, the first daffodil has
only one flower but it's out. It's the same every year. Just one
flower and then a few weeks later all the others come out.

You've got me worrying now as none of my daffs are showing above
ground (both old and new bulbs). Tulips, which are later flowering,
are showing lots of leaf growth. I wonder whether the warmer soil
through the winter has done something. Maybe the daffs don't think
it's growing time yet.

A few years ago I planted some native daffodils in grass, then a
couple of seasons later planted some more of the same variety, using
the same bulb planter (so same depth) to expand the area. The longer
established bulbs have sent up foliage and flowered sooner for at
least two seasons now.

Some of the newer bulbs are showing some foliage (the older ones are
well up), but it is difficult to see some of them in the grass, as
they are only an inch or so in height. If you are much north of here,
or in a colder location, there might be little or nothing to see as
yet.

Gardening on Wilts/Somerset border
on slightly alkaline clay.

We have two, both have been flowering for at least a week. Hundreds of
others are showing lots of leaf, but only those two are flowering.

Come on Jake, use your head.
Remember they are foreign bulbs.
They are learning Welsh before they have to face the world.

I think they're waiting for the umbrella delivery!

Anyhow, any sensible bulb knows you don't need to learn Welsh at the
growing stage as most of us have learned to speak English (which is
the only way we can understand those pesky monoglots). It's only at
the death stage that Welsh becomes required. Catholics go through
purgatory (compulsory Welsh lessons), and other religions accept a
corresponding period of essential preparation. It's only Anglicans
(arrogant C of E people) who think they can get away with speaking
English when they go "upstairs".

Fields of yellow here in west Cornwall, with armies of 'foreign
nationals' out picking them. Actually, the pickers pick them while
they're still in bud. The ones in flower are usually being grown for
the bulbs.

The bloody 'foreign nationals' that live up the road picked all mine when I
planted the front verge a couple of years ago.
