OK cats ... it's WAR
I am now on a mission.
We have one access to our property. It is via a gate from the main road, walking between two properties (an alleyway in effect) towards our garden then a left turn to our stairs leading to our flat. Now the problem is that our alley is used as a cat toilet...BIG TIME. Every night at least one or two cat dumps would mysteriously appear along the ally. We are plagued with at least 6 or 7 cats who use our garden and I have used everything over the last year or so to stop them fouling the alleyway. I have used all the specialised chemical deterrents on the market (powders and liquid) ... NO GOOD. I have used bleaches, even Jeyes Fluid and Jeyes Dustbin Powder...NO GOOD. Bought a high-powered, pump water pistol. Cats used to laugh at that. In desperation I filled it with a Jeyes solution ... it melted the water reservoir ... NO GOOD. I now use two ultrasound cat repellers around and down the alley. It has cut the crap by about 25% but there are still deaf cats about so ...NO GOOD. What do I do now? Summer is upon us and today the alley was full of crap and swarms of flies. I'm getting to the point where I want to buy an air rifle but fear this may be frowned upon so will not mention it just yet SERIOUSLY - Anyone know how to build an electric barrier (similar to cattle fencing but adjusted voltage for smaller mammals). I am no electronics expert so I am not too hot on volts and currents. I will be posting soon re gaining info and experiences in the hope that I could soon lobby my local council to make a bye-law as per references to the Public Health Act 1938 with reference also to the Environmental Protection Act 1990. Especially do not try to build one if you've not got a large amount of electrical knowledge! Hell, I'm "hot on volts and currents" with a professional electrical-circuit-design-for-skyscrapers-and-oil-rigs uncle and I still wouldn't evern start to think about plans! Don't be a dick and play with electrics that you don't know how to use. Charlie. Oh, and look up a story in the newspapers about a week ago about a guy who built a home made electric fence. Killed the cat and could have killed a child up to the age of about 8. |

We actually buy horse manure. (Biggest source of Tetanus infection) Anyway, you presumably have seen these cats doing it in your alley? It couldn't possibly be Foxes? We actually buy horse manure. (Biggest source of Tetanus infection) More than one cat that craps in my garden is a plague. Besides, the garden I can handle, it's the alleyway where we have to play slalem in the morning to go to work. Horse crap = excreated plant matter. Cat crap = mainly excreated animal matter. Compleatly different. It stinks and is socially unpleasent. Does not make the plants grow and has the potential to carry many more parasites and diseases. Anyway, you presumably have seen these cats doing it in your alley? It couldn't possibly be Foxes? Looks similar and smells worse and isn't buried. Neighbour saw a fox last night jump straight over a 6ft fence. Caught two different cats in the act on different days. Trouble is I was not quick enough with my water gun at the time. Well......For start stay away from the electric fence idea.... Far too dangerous.... Have you tried water bombs(balloons) on them? Keep a coolbox loaded with them near where you see them... And as soon as you see one launch it at them... Also.....One thing you can do is to find out where the cats live.... Have a word with the local council and get the owners to deal with them... Get them in trouble...Its about the only way to get cat owners whos cats go roaming to respect others Either that or tell the council that you have stray cats running around and get them to do something about it.... |

Ermm - after six months of trying all forms of cat repellent (who seem to do
their stuff on my lawn rather than borders and bury it - we don't have a catand there is a large cat population on our estate), and out of purefinancial exasperation I tried the Human Urine 'marking my territory' bit. It works very well ! Repeat every fort night (I collect mine in a milkbottle in the down stairs toilet and then sprinkle it over the lawn and fence posts after dark !!). The cats get the message. You might find that after a while the passway smells a bit to your nose - but atleast you won't be dodging things.. Sorry for those eating their tea whilst reading this post !! Regards all MC Have you tried a physical barrier, something spiky which you can still walk on, maybe holly cuttings, in my case I tend to put down some fire thin plastic mesh, which they cannot scratch and thus are not inclined to try and dump on. What about a gate at either end of the alleyway, and a spiky strip along the top, or a wobble small piece of trellis, tend to put them off. There really are a lot of other things to try. As a last ditch effort you could try supply them with a tray of sand somewhere else, I know, I know that's why it'sa last ditch effort !!! Also worth bearing in mind that UK law states that cat owners are not responsible for their cats, since it's not so straightforward to train them. Are they dumping straight on to the concrete path, or is there gravel or soil there, if it's gravel or soil, you might think about replacing it. If soil covering it. You could plant catnip all along the path, then you'd just have dozy cats, and a lot less crap. Ho hum a few ideas. Duncan |

walking between two properties (an alleyway in effect) towards our garden then a left turn to our stairs leading to our flat. What is the alleyway floored with? Earth? Grass? Shingle? Concrete? If a 'nice' base for cats, make it unpleasant? Eg large diameter shingle, slate chips etc? - h |
