Greenhouse Runner Beans
Having trouble with my runners ; they are a white self pollinating variety
growing extremely well with masses of flowers. These unfortunately are not setting and are falling off. The house is well ventillated at all times with doors and vents open fully. the roots are kept moist not sopping and other plants are also growing well. when I have similar problems outside I watered with a strong lime mix which helped ; not to keen to use this method in the house. Any Ideas please Lepslie |

It is too dry an atmosphere I should think and too hot. Runner beans do not
like excessive heat and will even suffer outdoors in a very hot year Robert The Devil's Advocate www.pafc.co.uk "Therefore" wrote in message ... : Having trouble with my runners ; they are a white self pollinating variety : growing extremely well with masses of flowers. Up until the recent wet summers, I couldn't get a serious crop, though people down near the drainage ditches could. They did tolerable well when I tried them in my polytunnel, but it was solid with foliage that year and very humid. Regards, Nick Maclaren. |

The message
from "Therefore" contains these words: Having trouble with my runners ; they are a white self pollinating variety growing extremely well with masses of flowers. Runner beans are self-fertile but I've ever heard of self-pollinating ones. Usually they need bees to fertilise the flowers, which are heavy enough to open the flowers and get inside. Not many bees go inside a GH; and anyway it will be too hot for the beans in there. Best grown outside imho, though if you are in an area with late frosts it's useful to start the beans in pots in the GH and plant them out in the 2nd week of June. Janet. |

Runner beans have a tendency to be rather later to pollinate than other types of beans. Those growing outside flower well, but they don't often crop on their first trusses - I think it is due to them relying on a later type of pollinating insect. We don't grow them in our greenhouse because of past failures to crop at all for us, though other people succeed with theirs. We grow either dwarf or climbing French beans inside, with dwarf French beans and runners outside. That gives us a continuous supply of fresh green beans from mid May to late autumn and there are plenty to go into the freezer for out of season use. -- Alan & Joan Gould - North Lincs. |

Greenhouse Runner Beans
We are trying runners in the GH for the first time this year. They are doing
very well and are we picking crops already. We have them in grow bags at one end of GH next to door which is permanently open. The bees seem quite happy to come in and do their bit (if necessary?). Door at other end of GH is also permanently open at the moment so we are getting lots of through ventilation (rather than just through opening windows). Watering twice daily has been necessary on occasions. Jeanne "Therefore" wrote in message ... Not many bees go inside a GH; I always have several bees inside my greenhouse busy cross pollinating my cacti. ;-) But then, cacti flowers are more showy than runner bean flowers and possibly more attractive to bees, so I'd go along with janet's advice. and anyway it will be too hot for the beans in there. You might do better with climbing french beans under glass. I grow the very old variety 'Caseknife' and trying this year a newish one 'Algarve' which seems to be doing OK. In any case spray over the plants as often as you can while watering. Rod |

Thank you all for your imput. The beans I am growing are white flowered and
have always been successful in the past. However this is a new green house in a different position and facing a different direction. Again thank you all. Lepslie "Rod" wrote in message ...
