Default Large mulberry tree to buy?

A very keen gardener I know wants to buy a large Morus nigra (in spite
of me telling them how awful mine had been) He can't seem to find any
stockists of large 50 litre pot grown trees Any one know of a supplier?

Been on the site but can't see Morus nigra Natalie, and from the plants
detailed they would only be normal sized specimens which is not really
what they want.

Try emailing them to ask the question. They certainly sell several
mulberries but I don't know what the chances are of getting one so big.

Can't speak for Janet but I can tell you that if it's grown in a lawn the red mess from the fallen berries is
er...........awful.
I love mulberry trees.

The blinking thing was grown from a seed and was ENORMOUS in a very
short time...... NOT slow growing. It also split really easily if the
was a strong wind and boughs kept breaking and falling on the hedge.
The fruit stained anything it touched and fell everywhere and the roots
are vine like, thick and yellow and grow right across the garden, up
under the greenhouse, and the whole tree rose in the lawn about 2 foot
so that you can't get the lawn mower over the grass.
It didn't get leaves until very very late in the year and lost them
first of all, they were huge leaves and blew everywhere and too ages to
rot down.
Besides that what a lovely tree, hardly any insects of birds liked it
..........

Why does he want a large specimen?

To my mind one of the joys of gardening is watching plants develop over
the years. Gardening is one of the few areas of life where it is
possible for individuals to plan for 10, 20, 30 years and more ...... It
is one of the things which really anoys me about certain TV programmes
which produce instant gardens - this approach is completely at odds to
what real gardening is about.

We purchased a 4ft Mulberry ~2 years ago. It has been planted in what
will, in several years time, be the centre of a small lawn, ~half of
which will be a wild flower meadow. We expect that it will start getting
close to what we would like in ~10 years, including a good crop of
mulberries.

Can't understand complaints about red stains on the lawn. Mulberries are
so delicious, especially when sun-warmed. Taste like good red wine
smells. I can't see any staying on the tree long enough.

For anybody who wants to sample ......... Hatfield House (~20 miles N of
London) gardens have 4 large, old mulberries. Around about now, they
have pounds of fruit. The branches come down sufficiently low that it is
not obvious you are stuffing yourself. Although, the dark red lips and
generally sticky appearance can attract some odd looks ......

the playing field opposite my house has a mulberry dating form the time of
the abortive attempt to develop a native silk trade. Wonderfully old and
tactile tree - with mulberries just come to full ripeness!

Most old black mulberries in the UK date from this attempt - by Charles
II, I believe. I think that he contributed quite a large sum of money to
subsidise the plantings and many thousands of trees were planted,
mainly, I would guess in SE England and E Anglia.

A pity that silk moth caterpillars only eat white mulberry leaves .....

An early example of misunderstanding which I fear has only got worse.

Depends on taste - do you like rich full flavour, or do you like a hint
of acidity with it?

Because he's 80, he opens his 6 acres to the public about twenty times a
year and all his other fruit specimen trees including a medlar and a
walnut are mature. He wants one in a 50 litre pot size.

Because I grew mine from a seed, the fruit was prolific but quite small,
but it doesn't half have a strong smell when it ripens and then
overripens! It smells sort of 'old wine' like especially after a lot had
dropped into the waterbarrel and the butterflies etc were getting
squiffy drinking the juice on the water that cover the concave dome.
