Rhubarb
I planted 3 Rhubarb crowns at the end of October. Everybody else's around me
seems to be sprouting but mine is doing nothing. Out of curiosity i carefully dug one up and it seems to be exactly the same as when I planted it; it doesn't appear to have rooted and I'm worried that crown it's just rotting. Any suggestions? |

Any suggestions? 1) Planted wrong way up ? 2) To wet - is rotted already ? 3) Duff plant - was dead before you started ? Put it back and forget it. It's too eraly for a new crown to be doing anything. -- Rusty Open the creaking gate to make a horrid.squeak, then lower the foobar. http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/hi-fi/ |

Leave it on the surface and let the frost get at it (rhubarb came from Siberia originally). Plant in the Spring with a load of well rotted manure. Don't harvest this year and perhaps next year either. After that it should be fine. -- Nick Wagg |

Probably a different variety to everyone elses. I have 2 crowns - one is shooting vigorously, the other is not yet showing. The one that's shooting always gives me early stems, and the other takes its time to get going, but produces larger thicker stems, and goes on later in the year. They are planted next to one another, and get exactly the same care (a load of manure or compost when I remember). Stick 'em back and check again in March. What is the best way to plant my own Rhubarb plant, using offcuts from someone else's one? Rhubarb is one of those things that nobody buys.... I think you have to grow it from divisions, and usually somebody near you will share some pieces. (See also "horseradish; the gift that keeps on giving.")
