Default Gladiolus question!!

Hi there,

Have had pots and pots of gladiolus growing back every year for the last 5
years. This year, the green spikey shoots have come up, but NO SIGNS OF THE
FLOWERS!!!!!

I dont really tend them - I guess because they seem to just pop up all by
themselves every year, I dont cut the shoots back as they die off, only
remove the dead heads.

What did I do wrong - if anything?

Any advice would be appreciated - the patio isnt the same with me
gladiolus!!!!

Have they been in the same pots and in the SAME COMPOST?
If so they have exhausted all the nutrients in the compost.
Have you fed them? Maybe tomato feed would help but it might be too
late for this year,
Perhaps you should repot them in fresh compost

Thanks Pam - I am ashamed of myself - you may have a point there - I do
rather take them for granted as they have given a splendid show for 5 years
or so.

And Brian, *that* had crossed my mind - but they flowered early end of May
last year!! I have checked the green spike leaves closely and cant see
anything resembling a flower forming. But will wait and see!

Thanks alot )

Surely it is too early to be looking for flowers on gladiolii just
yet?

Any advice would be appreciated - the patio isnt the same with me

Tracy, a chap withan allotment near me has a lot of gladioli in one
part of his plot, left in overwinter. They are nowhere near flowering
so maybe Brian is right and you may get flowers later.
Others have commented on things being late this year, so don't give up
hope yet.

Tracy~~~ I honestly feel that you are mistaken about the month of
previous flowering.
There are species that flower before now, such as G. byzantinus but the
normal Glads. are listed as 'Late July to September'. I am not sure if they
are 'day-length orientated' but it is genuinely too early to even see buds
at this time. They can be forced earlier but that is not what you are
attempting.
Best Wishes. Brian.

Yes, Franz, with the help of a couple of nice peeps here, I have come to
that conclusion. I will be patient and see what happens.
Thanks
