I was mainly concerned with keeping children at bay. I remember, when I
was a lad, my grandfather had a greenhouse and I used to..........well,
we won't go into that.

I think it's better to let them in to nibble some toms or whatever, it's
one of the way's they will get to like the idea of gardening.

I have now finished erecting my greenhouse and find that the catch
holding the door closed is right at the top of the door, well out of
reach of small children, so I don't have a problem after all.
The trouble that I was having with anchoring the GH to the concrete
standing which involved drilling through steel and concrete was solved
by borrowing a SDS drill with an all purpose bit. If the wind blows the
GH away now it will have a number of 3' x 2' concrete slabs attached to
it's bottom.
Thank you for all the good advice I have received from the folk here, it
was much appreciated. If anyone would care to offer advice on what would
be good to start off with, that too would be appreciated. I have a
Parasene Frost Shield 2kW electric heater installed and look forward to
seeing a bit of winter colour in there if that is possible.
At 73 I'm a bit of a late starter, but I'm keen :-)

Around here, most of the village had put out lovingly carved jack'o
lanterns, representing also a new effort towards a spirit of
togetherness in the village. Lovely: until they were all smashed to bits
by some such kids....

Are you sure? Could be some religious fundamentalist who objects to
anyone celebrating Halloween on the grounds it's "pagan witchcraft" :-(

You could be right, at that, Janet - an even more worrying thought
(((

This is not, I'm afraid, at all unlikely. You can be a hooligan
because you've got God on your side, or because you think nobody is.

Years back, when my two girls were six or so and I was living in
town, the head of the local Church school was very anxious for me to
take lots of pictures of the children innocently enjoying themselves
at a Hallowe'en fancy-dress party he'd organised. This was because
he'd received a barrage of complaints from the local wowsers for
daring to arrange such a wicked Godless thing. (My two won large
chocolate prizes for dressing up as pure, honest, uncarved pumpkins.
I have no doubt that the judges were totally unbiased.)

I utterly _detest_ the commercialised American Hallowe'en thing, but
it's got nothing to do with evil Satanism. I tried to teach my
children that All Souls was about remembering those who had died with
love and respect, and nothing to do with any particular repulsive
vegetable (all Australians may now divide on the issue of pumpkin
scones: ayes to the right, noes to the left. OK, it's even, so I give
my chairman's casting vote for the noes: who needs bloody pumpkins?)

The general opinion is, it was kids - (maybe the same kids who burned
down the cricket pavilion, the football store, lots of bus shelters and
even more cars... )

Best to go organic though if you've got kids eating the fruit without
washing it - like mine do. I get the impression that the kid in this
case was doing something more unpleasant than a bit of scrumping?

Some friends of mine had one outside on Sunday. They heard a bang and
when they went outside they saw the lid had flown off. They assumed it
was because they hadn't made big enough holes (hmm) but next morning
they found some kind soul had put a firework in it.
