Waterbutt With Overflow Outlet - Obtainable /
Got a water butt off a garage which quickly fills with water. Have to
connect a hose at base to drain etc. Do they still make water butts with a socket at the top of the butt to accept a standard hose tap ? I have tried the diy stores with no success and would prefer a mail order company as I don't have transport. Incidentally i have heard of down pipe diverters but this isn't what I am after. Thanks. If wood, plastic or metal, all you have to do is drill an appropriate hole in it, fit an appropriate fitting, and lead the pipe off that. If you have no equipment, find someone who does and bribe him appropriately. Regards, Nick Maclaren. |

LBS do mail order plumbing fittings, you should be able to use something like a tank connector which you can screw a tap onto ( they list several sorts and sizes at around £5) or you could scavenge the bits off an old toilet cistern! -- Charlie, gardening in Cornwall. http://www.roselandhouse.co.uk Holders of National Plant Collection of Clematis viticella (cvs) |

Mine has just overflowed naturally into its surroundings for fifteen years without any ill efects. Incidentally i have heard of down pipe diverters but this isn't what I am after. Franz |

Micko I'm confused :-(( Why do you want a tap at the TOP of the butt? I have 5 butts across the back of my garage and they are connected together as low as possible and the tap is at the bottom on just one, just high enough to get a watering can under. They all drain into this one, water finds its own level, and any time we have too much rain and the butts are full, (very rare) they just spill over onto the garden. If you have a tap at the TOP, as soon as you start to draw water off, once the level is below the tap, i.e. a couple of inches down from the top, the tap is high and dry ;-))???? and you are unable to get any more water out of the butt:-(( Many people in this newsgroup will now take GREAT DELIGHT in telling me that I am stupid and have it all wrong. You may want one that is permanently open and leads to a drain, to avoid overflow spilling over the sides. You don't need one with certain kinds of drainpipe diverter, with ballcocks and when overflow doesn't matter. The tap you use to get the water out for use is separate, as is any linkage between butts. Regards, Nick Maclaren. |
