Default We Have Frogs! :-)

Exciting News in my So Called Pond Life

A Week after my minnows spawned sending 100's of baby minnows into my
little ecosystem, my taddpoles have started to become Frogs! I have
seen them growing their front legs then back for the last month or so,
but today I saw one jump off a floating water lettuce! Very Exciting! I
only put in 5, they are hard to find or see but Im glad I got even a
glimpse of one after its transformation! hope they stick around, my 2
1/2 year old daughter who just loves our Turtles (Momma, Dadda, the
Baby (Sliders) and their Friend (painter). Anyway pond is growing
great, some of my plants are now flowering, my water lillies havent had
any flowers since may or June, not sure if its just not to hot (its
over 95 most days now) or if the turtles just are eating the bulbs-I
catch them doing it and find the evidence all the time! lol anyway my
so called pond life so much fun (and work) lol

You sound like a happy ponder. :-)) It is exciting to watch all the little
critters live their lives right in our own back yards. We're now finding
tiny toadlets all over the lawn, especially at night. The tree frogs stick
to our windows at night to catch the moths..... and yes, we also have loads
of rosy red minnows.

Seems to me they might be Bull Frogs! They are very cool, just hanging
out in the marsh bog area. They blend right into they surroundings its
funny as they watch you, you can get real close, i even caught one
earlier for my daughter to see. he was juping all over! lol

treefrogs? do they grow in the tadpoles stage too, then just leave
the pond? Is it safe to release such animals into the local enviroment!
Dont know we have tree frogs here in So CAL?

Also How many Tadpoles do people usually add to their pond? I only
added 5. I didnt want it to be a Frog lake, but I love watching the
whole process! Makes you feel like such a kid agin...LOL

Here is my blog with some SHOTS of the POND! I really need to add some
new ones, the plants haev grown in so much.

Being that you are in Southern California,
you've probably got Pacific Chorus Frogs,
they live all up and down the coastal states,
we have them here in the SE corner of
Washington state and in my Frog Bog.
They go from taddie to froglet and then head
for the trees, you probably won't see much of
them again until next spring.

I also have a bullfrog (and a tadpole that came
in a bag of water hyacinth).

Bullfrogs are not native west of the Rockies but
they are here to stay, have been for about the
last 100 years (they came in as dinner menu
items and escaped).

You can tell Bullfrogs by the fold of skin that
starts behind the eye and folds around the
eardrum.
They will eat fish, other frogs, snakes, mice,
birds so when they get bigger sometimes folks
like to remove them.

The one in my pond is not going anywhere. She
flummoxed two teenage boys and deserves to
stay. I've had up to seven in the pond and they
did keep the infant fish from taking over.

How many frogs... well, keep in mind that frogs
are in the food chain so they will get eaten along
the way and they will hop away to greener ponds,
so just put in what you want to enjoy and see what
happens.

## I didn't buy any of these frogs. They live here naturally and just moved
in when we built the ponds and propagation tanks. All of them start out as
pollywogs as far as I know. We have at least 5 different frogs in our
ponds.

## I know what you mean! :-)) I suppose people only buy a few... when the
parents lay eggs though, you get hundreds of them. Most don't survive from
what I see. The numbers dwindle until only a few grow legs and leave. If
you live in a subdivision I don't know where they'd go. We live in a rural
area and we're not far from a lake and farmer's stock ponds.

As Kathy mentioned, Pacific Treefrogs are probably around your area, but
they won't last long in bullfrog territory and they won't breed in a pond
with fish, at least the eggs won't survive if they do. Thus, I give them
their own fishless pond, till the taddies are big enough, about mid-June,
then I put in fantail goldfish that don't swim all that fast. By mid-July
they've all turned to froglets and leave for the garden. I usually see one
every other day in amongst my plants when I'm out and about.

It's not very likely - do you know what sort of tadpoles they were? Toads
seem to all disappear practically overnight, but even aquatic frogs will
mostly move on. Only Green & Bull frogs (in my area) spend much time in
the pond, and even they can, and do, travel long distances.

These are the two that hang around our place all the time, along with an
occasional leopard frog. The leopard frogs seem to come and go more than
the other two.

Boring,

Hey have you ever seen an aborted fetus?

One investigator reported on the testimony of a head nurse in a
gynecological ward where large numbers of such abortions were performed.
“She recounted many horrifying situations,” he said, “which included
babies born alive, for whom they had no facilities whatsoever in the
hospital. She personally witnessed one physician who happened to be
present at the birth of a live born baby, who subsequently drowned the
baby in a bucket of formalin.” Another report tells of babies aborted at
eight months, and says aborted babies able to live at six months “are
killed by doctors through injections or suffocating them in vinyl bags.”
The babies are viable, but they are killed.

What motive would that physician have to do such?

That's perhaps a necessary step in order to reach our full and unlimited
(cough) "reproductive rights." About a hundred years ago, G.K.
Chesterton saw what was coming when he wrote, "Let all the babies be
born. Then let us drown those we do not like." Which would be much more
humane than ripping out the brains of the unborn and disposing of their
remains like so much garbage. At least a drowned infant could be
accorded the dignity of a decent burial. The Romans used to dispose of
unwanted infants by leaving them to die of exposure, and often on the
doorsteps of Christians whose stupid compassion and respect for all
human life was common knowledge.
