I have plants that are dying and I don't know why. Can anyone help?
I am a gardening virgin. We overhauled my garden 18 months ago and I was very proud of myself for hardly losing any plants in the first year. But I seem to have a couple which are either diseased or being attacked by something and I don't know what to do!
http://www.chilledorifice.net/Plants/index.html is one of our webpages which has pics of our plants. The dying ones are pics 0449 and 0450. I think, possibly my lilles were attacked by the same thing but they are long since dead and shriveled. If anyone knows what this is and what I should do, could they let me know please. And...I'm so glad I found this place...I'm hoping to learn a thing or two! Thanks in anticipation. |

and forgive me for being a pain but can I ask what is the name of the plant in 2.jpg on the right, the one with tiny yellow flowers, I looked all over Google and BBC gardening but can't find the name for it, our neighbours have it in full bloom but they don't know the name either. Many Thanks for your help an I hope you will find yours solution (I would probably looK on Google "plant's name + disease" or something like that, I found what the problem was with my geraniums by searching in a similar way) |

And that was going to be my next question. If anyone can tell me what kind of plants I have in my garden, please feel do as there are many I have no idea about!!! I know the ones I bought, and some my mum has planted, but the ones that were there already, I have no idea of. Plus, mum tends to come visit with a box full of stuff and just tells me to plant it! I tried doing a google search - and found this place!! |

I guess it would be a tree. It has thick branch type things...but it could be considered a bush I suppose.... I don't think it has ever had flowers on it. http://www.chilledorifice.net/page1.htm is a pictorial of us doing the overhaulin. The item in question is the thing you will see at the bottom left hand side of the planted area. Its not a close up pic, but it will give you an idea of the size of it....at least until you get near the end of the makeover and see what happened when Mr Foo was asked to "prune" it! I really really know very little about gardening!! |

Maybe someone else will have an idea...... Jenny Ahhh, the million dollar question. The extent of my knowlege categorises my garden into "flowers" "Grass" and "bushy type things" Mr Foo and I have had a discussion over whether it is a tree, or a bush. Its not a shrub (they are kind of ground cover things aren't they?) Tree = 1 main stem with branches coming out higher up Bush = shrub = several stems from close to ground level I guess it would be a tree. It has thick branch type things...but it could be considered a bush I suppose.... I don't think it has ever had flowers on it. It looks to me like a willow, from the leaf texture and the rather nice orange bark to the twig. IME experience willows tend to do that. Not sure whether it's nutritional or fungal. But the leaves will all drop soon, then next year it will come up nice and fresh again. Your other plants aren't in danger. If it is a willow, there's a fair chance it will grow quite vigorously, but you can prune it drastically - for many willows this is a good idea as it stimulates more of the new shoots which have the more attractive bark. In your position, I would watch it for a year, then decide whether it's really pulling its weight in your garden or whether you'd like to remove it and replace it with something you like better.... though looking at the link below I think you have already made that decision! -- Kay "Do not insult the crocodile until you have crossed the river" |

If anyone can tell me what kind of plants I have in my garden, please feel do as there are many I have no idea about!!! 41 Santolina, or just possibly a very well maintained lavender. Can't see the detail of the leaves - if they have wobbly edges they're santolina. 43 - Sedum spectabile, good for dried flower heads providing colour into the autumn. The species is attractive to butterflies, but some of the varieties less so. 44 Dahlia 45 Something in the mallow family 46 Euphorbia cyparissias - looks good for a large part of the year with the feathery leaves, and yellow bracts around the flowers stay for a long time. Creeps by underground shoots so covers ground well - pull it out where you don't want it. 47 Mallow - possibly musk mallow which has pink or sometimes white flowers over a long season. Seeds itself round quite well 50 Hebe? 51 Something in the pea family - worth keeping to see what the flowers are like 13 Euphorbia, possibly the E cyparissias again. I know the ones I bought, and some my mum has planted, but the ones that were there already, I have no idea of. Plus, mum tends to come visit with a box full of stuff and just tells me to plant it! I tried doing a google search - and found this place!! What you may not realise is that you haven't found this place at all ;-) This place is uk-rec.gardening - a newsgroup - what you've found is a website which allows you a peek into what's happening here. -- Kay "Do not insult the crocodile until you have crossed the river" |

"foogirl" wrote ((snip)) I think, possibly my lilles were attacked by the same thing but they are long since dead and shriveled. I expect your lilies were attacked by Lilly Beetle... info is on this page just scroll down to the section on Scarlet Lilly Beetle. http://www.rhs.org.uk/research/proje...sp#lily_beetle At least they are post box red so can easily be seen and disposed of underfoot. The young look like bird droppings as they cover themselves with their own faeces. A systemic insecticide will do for them. -- Regards Bob In Runnymede, 17 miles West of London |
